WACO, Texas (AP) _ Derek Lagway and Melvin Barnett each ran for second-half touchdowns Saturday night as Baylor beat North Texas 23-10 to snap a 10-game losing streak and give rookie coach Kevin Steele his first victory.

Baylor (1-4) and North Texas (1-3) went into the game with two of the nation's lowest-scoring offenses _ Baylor ranked 100th among 114 Division I-A teams and North Texas 110th _ and both showed it in a first half that ended with Baylor ahead 9-3 and all the points coming on field goals.

The Bears woke up in the second half.

The Baylor defense set up the first touchdown drive, forcing North Texas to punt from its end zone and giving the offense the ball at the Eagles 38. Eight plays later, on second down from the 7, Lagway sprinted to his right, cut upfield and bounced into the end zone with 2:22 remaining in the third quarter to give the Bears a 16-3 lead.

On the next possession, Baylor went 89 yards in 11 plays, with Barnett going over the left side of the line from 1 yard out and put the Bears firmly in control 23-3.

North Texas scored on a 3-yard pass from Richard Bridges to Starsky Banks with 4:27 left in the game. Bridges, who came off the bench in the second quarter, found Banks alone on the right side of the end zone on fourth-and-2.

Darrell Bush had a career-high 164 yards rushing to pace a Baylor ground attack that gained 251 yards.

On Baylor's second possession of the game, the Bears drove 66 yards in 12 plays before stalling at the North Texas 23, where Kyle Atteberry's 40-yard field goal gave Baylor a 3-0 lead. He added field goals of 21 and 31 yards later in the half before North Texas' Jason Ball ended the period with a 32-yarder.
