BOX SCORE
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) _ There was no chance of a comeback this time. A week after Yale gave up 15 points in the final fives minutes in a one-point loss to Brown, the Elis ensured there would be no deja vu with Valparaiso on Saturday. Yale (1-1) instead racked up 369 passing yards, forced four fumbles and held the Crusaders to eight first downs to win 48-2. Yale starting quarterback Joe Walland completed 16 of 23 passes for 281 yards, four touchdowns, and one interception before leaving the game midway through the third quarter. The Elis used six quarterbacks in the game, including three in the game's final series. ``There's no such thing as garbage time on this team,'' Coach Jack Siedlecki said. Valparaiso's best chance at mounting a comeback came early in the third quarter, when Yale held a 28-2 lead. Quarterback Andy Huegli (8-19, 107 yards, 1 interception) hit Matt Junia with a 44-yard pass to put the Crusaders (2-1) on Yale's 12-yard line. Two plays later, the Crusaders fumbled the ball and lost possession. Valparaiso forced Yale to punt, though, and got the ball back on the Yale 33. This time, however, Eli linebacker Peter Mazza intercepted the ball on the 67-yard line and ran it in to make the score 34-2. Yale cruised through the rest of the game. ``I guess it was a big play,'' Mazza said. ``It didn't really matter in terms of the outcome, but in terms of the defense and the team, we were still playing (hard). That's a good sign for us.'' Walland connected on touchdown passes to four different players, including three who caught their first career touchdown passes. Overall, Walland found seven different receivers. ``It seemed like everything we ran worked,'' Walland said. ``It was a great day.'' For Yale, Jeff Ditman caught the ball three times for 40 yards and two touchdowns. Jake Fuller caught two passes for 76 yards and one touchdown and Eric Johnson added another TD, catching five passes for 72 yards. Valparaiso punted 11 times and amassed 168 total yards. Prior to the game, the Crusaders' defense gave up just 9.5 points a game. Valparaiso's only points came on a safety in the first quarter when Walland was called for intentional grounding in the end zone.
