SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) _ Deonce Whitaker became the first in school history to rush for more than 100 yards in five consecutive games and Chris Kasteler passed for 295 yards and two touchdowns as San Jose State defeated Tulsa 34-10 Saturday night.

Whitaker had 123 yards and scored his 10th touchdown of the season as the Spartans (2-2) won their second straight conference opener. He left the game with 14:42 to play because of a sprained ankle.

Damon Savage caught eight passes for 119 yards for Tulsa (1-3).

Whitaker scored on a 2-yard run midway through the third quarter to put the Spartans up by two touchdowns. He also had 18 receiving yards and returned a kickoff 71 yards.

Tim Morgan kicked his second field goal of the game with 7:21 left for a 27-10 San Jose State advantage, and Casey LeBlanc scored on a 30-yard run with 5:18 left.

Kasteler, who completed all 10 of his second-half passes, was 21-of-28 overall.

Tulsa took advantage of a San Jose State fumble to take a 3-0 lead early in the game. Jeremy McClure recovered at the Spartans 29. Three plays later, Chris Earnest connected on a 39-yard field goal.

After San Jose State missed a field goal, the Golden Hurricane drove 79 yards in six plays, taking a 10-0 lead with 9:30 remaining in the first quarter on John Mosely's 19-yard run. A key to the drive was a 36-yard pass from Michael Wall to Savage.

The Spartans responded with an eight-play, 93-yard drive to close within 10-7. Frank Pulley caught a 29-yard pass from Kasteler for the touchdown.

Morgan's 41-yard field goal with seven seconds remaining in the first quarter tied it 10-10.

Sean Brewer's 4-yard reception from Kasteler midway through the second quarter gave San Jose State a 17-10 lead following a seven-play, 64-yard drive.
