NEW YORK (AP) _ Norman Hayes and Chris Schaefer scored 10 seconds apart as Columbia converted two fourth-quarter turnovers into touchdowns for a 28-13 victory over Towson on Saturday.

Jason Bivens forced a fumble by Towson quarterback Joe Lee that was recovered by the Lions' Greg Bowman at the Tigers' 29. Hayes scored nine plays later, before Darnell Evans fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Schaefer ran the recovery in from the 11.

Hayes rushed for 124 yards on 22 carries to account for nearly half of the Lions' 253 yards of total offense.

Towson (3-1) led 13-7 midway through the third quarter before Jeff McCall threw a 10-yard scoring pass to fullback John Cavanaugh to give Columbia a 14-13 lead.

The Tigers were thwarted on a scoring drive at the Lions' 3-yard line that produced only Ed Kulic's field goal.

Columbia (1-1) took a 7-0 first-quarter lead on a 69-yard punt return by Justin Meadlin. Kulic kicked a 29-yard field goal and Lee passed 29 yards to tailback Jason Corle to give the Tigers a 10-7 halftime advantage.

Kulic's 28-yard field goal expanded the lead to 13-7 in the third quarter.
