WASHINGTON (AP) _ Howard used a pair of fumble returns for touchdowns Saturday to offset the all-around threat of Texas Southern's speedy Joey Jamison en route to a 32-20 victory.

Jamison, who last year led all NCAA Division I-AA kick returners and entered Saturday's game averaging 34.2 yards per return, tallied 271 total yards against Howard (2-2).

Jamison caught two passes for 102 yards and one touchdown, returned three punts for 81 yards and one touchdown and a kickoff for 26 yards. He also rushed three times for 19 yards.

Jamison's 84-yard touchdown reception from backup quarterback Julious Davis pulled Texas Southern (2-2) to a 26-20 deficit with 6:29 remaining in the third quarter.

The Bison then marched 85 yards in 11 plays, capped by running back Jermaine Hutchinson's 29-yard touchdown run for a 32-20 lead with 13:19 left in the fourth quarter.

Hutchinson, who finished with a game-high 112 yards on 23 carries, also capped Howard's nine-play, 80-yard drive on the first series of the game with a 4-yard touchdown run, giving the Bison a 7-0 lead with 10:17 remaining in the first quarter.

Howard's defense, which limited Texas Southern to 188 offensive yards, took control of the game by virtue of Oby Ariah's 18-yard fumble return for a touchdown with 11:32 remaining in the second quarter and Vontrae Long's 34-yard fumble return for a touchdown with 12:52 left in the third, giving Howard a 26-13 lead.

David Johnson scored Howard's other touchdown on a 3-yard run with 54 seconds remaining in the second quarter. Bison quarterback Bobby Townsend completed 13 of 32 passes for 217 yards with one interception. Howard senior wide receiver Elijah Thurmon had a game-high seven receptions for 117 yards.

Jamison, who lined up in the Tigers' backfield for three quick pitches on their final possession, also had an electrifying, 95-yard punt return nullified by a clipping penalty with 25 seconds remaining in the game.

Running back Ray Rubins led Texas Southern in rushing with 67 yards on 15 carries, including a four-yard touchdown run with 14:55 left in the second quarter.
