JONESBORO, Ark. (AP) _ LaDainian Tomlinson ran for 190 yards and two touchdowns in the first half and made two big first downs in the final minutes as Texas Christian edged Arkansas State University 24-21 Saturday night.

Neither team scored in the second half. TCU (1-2, 0-0 WAC) did not make consecutive first downs in the second half until its final possession that started on the Frogs' 9 with 5:07 to play. Tomlinson converted third-and-short with a tough run inside and made 9 when the Frogs had third-and-eight. There were only 33 seconds left when ASU (0-4, 0-0 Big West) got the ball back.

Tomlinson wound up with 269 yards on 40 carries, only 3 yards shy of the Indian Stadium record set by Joe Abdullah of Pacific in 1994.

TCU, which made 273 yards in the first half, had to punt on each of its first four possessions in the second half. The Frogs had fourth-and-inches on their second possession and jumped offsides _ one of their 14 penalties.

The Indians started from their 12 late in the third quarter and made three first downs before Chet Lemon's dinky pass over the middle was deflected by Aaron Schobel. The ball bounced around in the air before Terrance Maiden plucked it and returned it 35 yards to the ASU 16. On fourth and a long 1, Casey Printers _ the first true freshman to start at quarterback for TCU since 1993 _ stumbled coming out from under center and was swarmed for a loss.

The Frogs' containment broke down and Lemon made 22 before he ran out of bounds at the Frogs' 48. Sacks by Maiden and Schobel forced a punt.

The Frogs led 21-7 12 minutes deep in the first quarter, but Jonathan Adams broke loose on a 51-yard touchdown run and the Indians turned a fumbled punt into another touchdown.

Adams, who had 12 yards on 12 carries in the Indians' first three games, made 123 yards on 16 carries in the first half and wound up with 155 on 26 attempts. He was in the lineup because Lamont Zachery was injured last week.

Adams' first touchdown completed a 13-play, 80-yard drive, but Tomlinson erased that when he ran 79 yards on TCU's first play. Printers escaped a big loss and threw to Mike Scarborough who kept his feet in bounds for a 15-yard gain. Two plays later, Tomlinson scored standing up from the 5. Far behind any defender, Scarborough fell at the ASU 2 while backingpedaling to catch Printers' 50-yard-pass. Charles Jones made it 21-7.

Tomlinson gained 4, 12, 9, 3 and 17 as the Frogs reached the ASU 4. After three penalties, they settled for a 44-yard field goal by Chris Kaylakie that made it 24-14.

LaVar Veale's fumbled punt was recovered by Maurice Joyner at the TCU 15 and a pass interference penalty set up Lemon's 3-yard touchdown pass to Walker.
