BELLINGHAM, Wash. (AP) _ Quarterback Scott Mitchell ran for one touchdown and threw for another as Western Washington beat St. Mary's, California 20-7 Saturday.

Mitchell's first score, a three-yard run, was set up by a fumbled punt after the opening series that gave the Vikings (2-1) the ball back on the Gaels' (1-3) 23-yard-line.

Western Washington got the ball back in the exact same spot on the next play, after defensive lineman Matt Alderman intercepted a deflected pass on the first St. Mary's play from scrimmage. The Vikings went on to score on a nine-yard pass from Mitchell to wide receiver Ben Clampitt for a 14-0 lead.

St. Mary's cut the lead to 14-7 in the second quarter on a 22-yard scoring strike from Gus Papanikolas to wide receiver Mike Kelleher.

Josh Bailey's 35-yard field goal following a six-minute, 13-play drive, gave the Vikings a 17-7 halftime lead.

St. Mary's had a chance to pull within a touchdown late in the third quarter, but Brad Scheppler's 30-yard field goal attempt was blocked by the Vikings' Mike Perez.

Bailey closed the scoring with a 44-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.

Mitchell completed 17 of 28 passes for 148 yards and no interceptions. Clampitt had six receptions and 60 yards for Western Washington.

Papanikolas completed 17 of 27 passes for 173 yards and had two interceptions. Kelleher had 8 receptions for 77 yards. The Gaels' running game was held to 34 yards on 32 carries.
