Prentice has 2 TDs as RedHawks beat Central

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (AP) -- Travis Prentice extended his NCAA record for games with two touchdowns as Miami of Ohio beat Central Michigan 24-16 Saturday.

Central (1-3, 0-1 Mid-American), which had given up an average of 41 points in its first three games against Purdue, Eastern Illinois and Syracuse, outgained Miami 302-218.

Central also had 19 first downs compared with 14 for Miami and held a four-minute advantage in time of possession, but the RedHawks (3-1, 2-0) made the most of their chances.

Prentice scored on a 2-yard run in the first quarter and a 1-yard run in the third quarter. It was the 23rd time Prentice has scored two or more touchdowns in a game, extending the mark he set last week when he broke Ricky Williams' NCAA record of 21.

Prentice, the Mid-American Conference's career rushing leader, gained 76 yards on 19 carries.

Central (1-3, 0-1) opened the scoring when D.J. McClure scored on a 1-yard run eight minutes into the first quarter, but Miami tied it on Prentice's first TD run with 2:49 left in the period.

The teams traded field goals in the second period. Paul Savich then kicked a field goal from 37 yards out with 5:50 remaining in the second to put the Chippewas ahead 13-10 at the half.

In the third quarter, Miami linebacker Dustin Cohen intercepted a pass by Pete Shepherd and returned it 7 yards for a touchdown that put the RedHawks ahead 17-13. Miami made it 24-13 when Prentice scored his second TD with 23 seconds left in the third quarter.

Shepherd completed 14-of-34 for 211 yards, but was sacked four times and intercepted three times. Miami's Mike Bath was 7-of-20 for 130 yards. He was sacked four times and threw two interceptions.

Central's Jammarl O'Neal caught six passes for 103 yards and Robbie Mixon rushed for 67 yards on 23 carries.
