SAN JOSE, California (Ticker) -- Deonce Whitaker ran for a career-best 203 yards and four touchdows as San Jose State routed St. Mary's, 38-3. Whitaker needed 24 carries to eclipse his previous career best by 27 yards. He also returned the opening kickoff 89 yards to put San Jose State (1-2) in front to stay, 7-0. Whitaker's four-yard run made it 14-0 six minutes into the contest and his 35-yard TD pushed the lead to 21-0 before the period was over. The 5-6 Whitaker had an 11-yard TD run in the second quarter and a 47-yard score. His four rushing touchdowns tied the school record set four times, most recently by Nathan DuPree at Pacific on November 14, 1992. Tim Morgan kicked a 23-yard field goal with 6:43 left in the fourth quarter for San Jose State, which has taken three of four meetings with St. Mary's. Brandin Young had 87 yards on 14 carries for the Gaels (1-2), who were playing a Division I opponent for the first time since 1996. Brad Scheppler's 22-yard field goal in the third quarter was the lone score for St. Mary's.
