LAFAYETTE, Louisiana (Ticker) -- James Easterling proved an ample replacement for injured Ricky Williams, rushing for 114 yards and two touchdowns as Texas Tech posted its first win of the season, a 38-17 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette.

Limited to 33 yards in a season-opening loss to Arizona State, the Heisman hopeful Williams sat out with a knee injury. But Easterling carried 25 times, scoring on a five-yard run in the first quarter and a three-yard jaunt late in the third period.

Rob Peters completed 11-of-21 passes for 245 yards and a pair of TDs. Rickey Hunter rushed 17 times for 77 yards for Texas Tech (1-1), which racked up 491 yards of total offense and held the Ragin' Cajuns to just eight first downs and 148 yards.

Peters hit Tim Baker on a 55-yard TD pass 3 1/2 minutes into the second quarter to extend the lead to 21-10. Travis Schwartz picked off Peters' pass and returned it 34 yards for a score 50 seconds later, pulling Louisiana-Lafayette within 21-17.

But Peters found Derek Dorris with an 11-yard scoring strike and Easterling's three-yard run with 50 seconds left in the period gave Texas Tech a 35-17 cushion.

Both Barton Folse and Derek Dyer were ineffective for the Ragin' Cajuns (0-2), combining to complete 10-of-19 passes for just 94 yards. Dyer led the rushing attack with just 27 yards on three carries.

Louisiana-Lafayette has allowed 849 yards of total offense in its first two games.
