AMES, Iowa (AP) _ Darren Davis rushed for 235 yards and Sage Rosenfels threw an 80-yard touchdown pass to Damien Groce, lifting Iowa State to a 17-10 victory over Iowa on Saturday night.

Davis carried 38 times and scored the game's first touchdown on an 11-yard run as Iowa State (2-0) beat Iowa (0-2) for the second consecutive year after losing to the Hawkeyes 15 straight times.

It was his fifth 200-yard game for Davis, a senior who was helped off the field three times after being buried by tacklers but kept returning. He ran for 244 yards in a 27-9 victory over Iowa last year.

Groce's touchdown catch, the seventh-longest pass play in Iowa State history, made it 14-0 after one quarter and the Cyclones, 2-0 for the first time since 1985, seemed poised to turn the game into a rout.

Iowa State stalled at key times after that, however, and Iowa drew to 17-10 on Tim Douglas' 47-yard field goal with 6:36 left.

Matt Bowen's interception at the Iowa State 36 with 4:58 remaining gave Iowa a chance to draw even closer. But James Reed dropped Kevin Kasper for a 9-yard loss on a reverse, the Hawkeyes had to punt two plays later and Iowa State held on.

Iowa, limited to 57 yards rushing in a 42-7 loss to Nebraska a week ago, had just 62 yards on the ground this time. The Hawkeyes were 0-for-12 on third-down conversions and got their only touchdown on Robbie Crockett's 1-yard run in the third quarter.

Davis' 54-yard burst up the middle set up Mike McKnight's first field goal as a collegian, a 39-yarder that made it 17-7 early in the fourth quarter.

Iowa State made it look easy on its first two possessions.

Helped by a 15-yard face mask penalty against Iowa, the Cyclones drove 75 yards in 10 plays for a touchdown on the opening series. The face-mask call gave Iowa State a first down after Davis gained 6 yards on third-and-20 from the ISU 43.

Rosenfels' 23-yard completion to Groce put the ball on the 11, and on the next play, Rosenfels' block on cornerback Tarig Holman sprung Davis on a touchdown run around left end.

The Cyclones needed just three plays to score on their next possession. Groce beat Mikkel Brown running straight down the field, caught the ball just inside the 50 and outran the pursuit to make it 14-0.

Iowa State had two good chances to add to its lead in the first half. Holman's end zone interception stopped Iowa State at the Iowa 13 and Anthony Herron blocked McKnight's 28-yard field goal attempt on the final play of the half after the Cyclones had driven to the 12.

But Iowa State was in no danger of losing the lead because Iowa went nowhere. After a promising drive on its first possession, which ended with Douglas missing a 37-yard field goal attempt, Iowa had only one more first down the rest of the half.

When the Hawkeyes finally did score, it came after they got the ball on the Iowa State 35 following a short punt. Ladell Betts' 24-yard run took Iowa to the 5 and Crockett scored two plays later, taking a pitchout from McCann and going untouched around right end.
