SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) _ Troy Nunes threw for three touchdowns Saturday night, two to Quinton Spotwood, as Syracuse rolled past Central Michigan 47-7.

It was the first meeting between the schools, and the Chippewas probably would be happy if it was the last, at least for a while.

Syracuse (2-0) entered the game having lost its last five home openers, but the Chippewas (1-1) were overmatched from the start. Syracuse outgained them 495-241.

Spotwood, who suffered a knee injury against Cincinnati last October and missed the final seven games of the season, caught scoring passes of 56 and 43 yards to help stake the Orangemen to a 34-7 halftime lead.

Spotwood, who returned four punts for touchdowns two years ago to tie an NCAA record and gain national attention, finished with six catches for 135 yards.

Dee Brown got the Orangemen started on their first play from scrimmage with a 41-yard run. Nunes, who got his second straight start, hit Pat Woodcock with a 15-yard touchdown pass five plays later for a 7-0 lead with 10:33 left in the first quarter and the rout was on.

Central Michigan, which opened its season with a 33-17 win over Division I-AA Eastern Ilinois, punted on its first four possessions and the Orangemen took advantage repeatedly.

A muffed punt by Central Michigan's Jake Kemp set up Nate Trout's 39-yard field goal with 4:49 left in the first.

Spotwood, who did not catch a pass in a season-opening, 35-12 win over Toledo, then beat cornerback Tedaro France, adjusting nicely to the ball for a 56-yard scoring play and a 17-0 lead. It was his first TD reception since a game-winning catch against Pittsburgh in November 1997.

The Chippewas scored their only touchdown early in the second quarter. Pete Shepherd hit tailback Eric Flowers for a 17-yard gain to get a 10-play, 84-yard drive started, then finished it by hitting Jammarl O'Neal with a 3-yard touchdown pass.

Flowers, the team's leading rusher, was hurt on the previous play and did not return. Syracuse's Brown also was hurt in the second quarter and did not play again.

Spotwood electrified the Carrier Dome crowd again with his second score, catching a short pass from Nunes over the middle at the Central Michigan 30 and breaking outside for a touchdown midway through the period.

Keeon Walker blocked a punt by Kemp and Will Allen recovered it in the end zone to put Syracuse ahead 31-7 just over two minutes later.

Spotwood's 12-yard catch set up Trout's 34-yard field goal with three seconds left in the half.

Madei Williams hit Malik Campbell with a 46-yard toss, then scored two plays later on a six-yard run to give Syracuse a 40-7 lead late in the third. Kyle Johnson added a 6-yard TD run in the fourth to finish it.

Nunes, battling Williams for the chance to replace Donovan McNabb as the Syracuse starter, was 8-of-13 for 170 yards. Williams, suffering from a finger injury on his non-throwing hand, was 5-of-6 for 91 yards.

Shepherd was 16-of-29 for 165 yards, and Vince Webber had 62 yards rushing on 16 carries for the Chippewas.

Syracuse middle linebacker Keith Bulluck, one of the team's five captains, did not play. He was suspended for the game by head coach Paul Pasqualoni for violating team rules.
