FRESNO, California (Ticker) -- Billy Volek completed 13-of-20 passes for 200 yards and tossed four touchdowns to four different receivers as Fresno State routed Portland State, 34-6, in the season opener for both schools.

Volek, a senior who finished last season with only three interceptions in 261 attempts, did not throw a pick today and opened the scoring when he connected with tight end Vince Branstetter on a 10-yard scoring strike just over five minutes into play.

The Bulldogs (1-0) took a 14-0 lead when Volek found Rodney Wright on a 39-yard touchdown pass just over four minutes later. Volek and tight end Billy Jack Pierce hooked up from five yards with 11:38 remaining in the first half as Fresno State opened a 21-0 cushion.

Wright caught six passes for 94 yards and Marcellus Armstrong led the Bulldogs ground attack with 49 yards on 11 carries.

Portland State (0-1) finally got on the board when Dan Frantz booted a 35-yard field goal as time expired in the second quarter.

Volek took less that two minutes to strike again, tossing a 45-yard TD pass to Charles Smith to give the Bulldogs a 28-3 bulge. Paris Gaines rushed for 32 yards on eight carries for Fresno State, including a one-yard dive that capped the scoring with 6:15 to play.

Frantz kicked a 43-yarder with 11:13 remaining for the Vikings, who slipped to 0-4 all-time against Fresno State.

Jimmy Blanchard was 21-of-45 for 195 yards with an interception for Portland State.
