Walker loses in Northwestern debut

  RECAP

EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) -- Randy Walker's old school showed his new one how to play solid, fundamental football Saturday.

Travis Prentice ran for two scores to move into third place on the NCAA career rushing touchdown list and Mike Bath threw two second-half TD passes to Sly Johnson as Miami of Ohio routed Northwestern 28-3, ruining Walker's debut as coach of the Wildcats.

Most of Miami's players were Walker recruits. He coached at Miami for nine years, compiling a 59-35-5 record before moving to Northwestern last January to replace Gary Barnett, who went to Colorado.

Big road victories are nothing new for Miami. Under Walker, Miami won at North Carolina last season, and at Evanston in 1995 handed Northwestern its only regular-season loss during its Rose Bowl season.

Now Miami has a big victory away from home under Terry Hoeppner, who was an assistant at Miami for 13 years before replacing Walker. Miami is 11-2 in its last 13 road games.

Prentice ran 9 yards for his first score less than three minutes into the game, right after Miami's Michael Adams blocked a punt by Northwestern's J.J. Standring.

In the second quarter, Prentice made a great fake and then went 23 yards for another touchdown, the 58th rushing TD of his career to pass Marshall Faulk for third place on the NCAA career list. Ricky Williams (72) and Indiana's Anthony Thompson (64) are 1-2 on the list.

Northwestern had a string of mistakes in the first half -- the blocked punt, an interception of a pass by Nick Kreinbrink, who was making his first collegiate start, and Kreinbrink's overthrow of wide-open Sam Simmons in the end zone, and a missed field goal.

The Wildcats did drive to the Miami 2 in the second quarter, but Damien Anderson was thrown for a 2-yard loss on third down and all the Wildcats got was a 21-yard field goal from Tim Long to trail 14-3.

Bath threw a 15-yarder to Johnson in the third quarter and they hooked up on a 73-yarder in the fourth.

Northwestern observed a moment of silence before the game in memory of three people -- former Wildcats fullback Matt Hartl, who died last week from Hodgkin's Disease; and former basketball coach Ricky Byrdsong and former Wildcats defensive tackle Bobby Russ, who were shot and killed in separate incidents earlier this year.
