CLEMSON, South Carolina (Ticker) -- Doug Chapman's seven-yard touchdown run with 1:10 remaining lifted Marshall to a 13-10 victory over Clemson, spoiling the coaching debut of Tommy Bowden.

Chapman's run capped an 11-play drive that covered 76 yards in 6:03. The Thundering Herd (1-0) had not scored since Billy Malashevich booted a 22-yard field goal with 7:34 remaining in the first quarter to provide a 6-0 lead.

It was the first win in four meetings over an ACC school for Marshall, which was facing Clemson for the first time.

Bowden, the son of Florida State coaching legend Bobby Bowden, has the job of turning around a team that went 3-8 during the 1998 season, including a 1-7 Atlantic Coast Conference mark.

The Tigers (0-1) allowed 394 yards by the Thundering Herd's explosive offense but did a good job of keeping them off the scoreboard while amassing 348 themselves. Brandon Streeter completed 23-of-36 passes for 187 yards and was intercepted once while Jarvis Austin carried 14 times for 49 yards.

Marshall's Chad Pennington, who entered the season as a darkhorse candidate for the Heisman Trophy, was 29-of-44 for 333 yards and three interceptions. Chapman totaled 53 yards on 13 carries.

Clemson cut the deficit in half early in the second quarter, when Tony Lazzara booted a 42-yard field goal. After a scoreless third quarter, the Tigers took a 10-6 lead on Austin's nine-yard run with 7:13 to play.

Malashevich's 24-yard field goal with 1:36 remaining in the first quarter opened the scoring.
