LEXINGTON, Kentucky (Ticker) -- Chris Redman threw for 324 yards and five touchdowns as Louisville opened its season with a 56-28 victory over Kentucky before a Commonweath Stadium record crowd of 70,692.

Coming off a season in which he threw for more than 4,000 yards, Redman completed 30-of-40 passes and tossed at least three touchdown passes in a game for the 11th time in his career and the seventh time in the last 13 contests.

Redman helped Conference USA snap a 14-game losing streak against the Southeastern Conference. A Conference USA team had not defeated an SEC opponent since Memphis upset No. 6 Tennessee in 1996.

The senior quarterback tossed three scoring strikes to Ibn Green, giving the duo a combined 26 TDs at Louisville. Troy Kopp and Aaron Turner of Pacific combined for an NCAA-record 33 scores from 1989-1992.

Dusty Bonner, replacing top draft pick Tim Couch for Kentucky, completed 34-of-62 passes for a career-high 446 yards. Couch had his uniform number retired in pre-game ceremonies.

After Louisville opened a 7-3 first-quarter lead, Redman tossed scoring strikes of five and one yards to Green in a 21-point second period that gave the Cardinals a 28-10 halftime bulge.

Marc Samuel kicked a 27-yard field goal for Kentucky 2:37 into the second half, but Louisville erupted for three more scores in just over eight minutes to put the contest away. Redman fired a 12-yard TD pass to Green to give the Cardinals a 49-13 lead with 32 seconds remaining in the third period.

The teams combind for nearly 1,000 yards of total offense, with Louisville gaining 518. Cardinals running back Frank Moreau rushed for 181 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries, while Kentucky's James Whalen had eight receptions for 115 yards, his first career 100-yard game.

Louisville cut Kentucky's lead in the series to 9-3 and avenged a 68-34 loss to the Wildcats last season.
