Aug. 1, 1950 Born in Spruce Pine, N.C. Grew up in Biltmore, N.C.
1964-68 Four year letter-winner in basketball and baseball at T.C. Robertson High School in Asheville, N.C. Named all-county and all-state in basketball (1967, 1968).
1968-69 Played freshman year at University of North Carolina as a non-scholarship player.
Spring, 1972 Graduated UNC with a bachelor's degree in education.
Spring, 1973 Earned master's degree in teaching (M.A.T.) from UNC.
1973-1978 Began coaching career at Swannonoa (N.C.) Owen High School. Also coached golf and football. Served as athletic director for two years.
1978-88 Served as an assistant coach at UNC under Dean Smith. While at UNC, Williams was part of Carolina's NCAA title-winning team in 1981-82.
July 8, 1988 Hired as head coach at Kansas.
Nov. 25, 1988 First game and first win on the Jayhawks bench (94-81 vs. Alaska Anchorage in the Great Alaska Shootout).
Nov. 11. 1989 Williams' first win over a No. 1 team came with a 91-77 victory over UNLV in Preseason NIT semifinals.
Feb. 26, 1991 Clinched a share of first Big Eight title with an 88-57 victory over Iowa State.
March 23, 1991 Earned first Final Four berth.
March 13, 1992 Earned 100th win (84-66 vs. Colorado in Big Eight Tournament).
Jan. 28, 1996 Reached 200 wins faster than any coach in Big Eight history with an 88-73 win over Nebraska.
Feb. 1, 1997 Williams' Kansas team sets a school record with its 22-0 mark after an 82-77 win over Nebraska in OT.
Feb. 22, 1997 Clinched first Big 12 title with a 78-58 win over Kansas State.
Jan. 24, 1998 Set school record with 56 consecutive home wins following an 88-49 win over Texas Tech.
Feb. 20, 1999 Reached 300 wins faster than any coach in NCAA history with a 60-50 victory over Oklahoma.
July 6, 2000 Announces that he will stay at Kansas rather than take the head-coaching position at North Carolina.
