Two newcomers join the crowd

The Cinderella Watch has its first casualty. Well, two actually. First, by decree of the 17,148 votes in last week's poll, Pepperdine has been shown the door for receiving just 3.6 percent of the votes.

The Waves aren't alone with their pink slip. New Mexico State blew an 11-point lead over a sub-.500 North Texas to lose 75-73, the Aggies' first loss to the Eagles since Feb. 14, 1974. Adios, New Mexico State.

And for the hordes clamoring for the BYU Cougars to be included here, we might have the first instance of a team being jinxed before they even made it on the Watch. The Cougars dropped back-to-back road games to Air Force and New Mexico and won't get another chance to make up for those losses until a Feb. 12 showdown at Utah.

If you want to see the final results from last week's poll, you can find it in the user feedback from the first Watch.

Dayton Flyers
Record RPI Mo' Marquee victory
16-3 (6-1 A-10) 22 Up Defeated Kentucky 68-66

Two wins helped the Flyers separate themselves from the Atlantic 10 West pack. Duquesne holds down second place with a lackluster 3-4 conference mark. Wednesday's game at Xavier will give the Flyers a chance to prove wrong any doubters who question their place as a conference contender.

Indiana State Sycamores
Record RPI Mo' Marquee victory
15-5 (8-1 MVC) 69 Up Defeated Indiana 63-60

For the past few years, the Missouri Valley Conference has supplied solid NCAA Tournament entries. This season, it looks like Indiana State is taking the baton from the Creightons, Evansvilles and Southwest Missouri States. A huge win over Indiana in the Indiana Classic (the Hoosiers' first loss in the 26-year history of the tournament) could help the Sycamores get back to the Big Dance for the first time since Larry Bird led them to the title game in 1979.

Iowa State Cyclones
Record RPI Mo' Marquee victory
18-3 (6-1 Big 12) 15 Up Defeated Kansas 74-66

Longtime readers of the Watch know that nothing makes us stand up and notice a team like a big win. Iowa State delivered such a victory last weekend over Kansas, giving the Cyclones a much-needed marquee win. Until last weekend, Iowa State's biggest win had come over a mediocre Arkansas team in the Big Island Invitational. The Cyclones almost broke through against Oklahoma on Jan. 22 but lost in overtime. Armed with a shiny top-20 RPI that has room to grow should the Cyclones keep winning (they still have games left against Kansas, Texas and Oklahoma State), Iowa State isn't about to blow away. And if the Cyclones keep it up, they won't stay a Cinderella -- they'll be promoted to full-time contender status.

Kent Golden Flashes
Record RPI Mo' Marquee victory
15-4 (7-3 MAC) 13 Side Defeated St. Bonaventure 73-60

Momentum gained from a big win over Bowling Green was squandered by losing to Toledo by 13 at home. Fattening up on Western and Central Michigan this week will help Kent's image. On the flip side, the Flashes' RPI is only going to go down. No other Mid-American team has an RPI less than 70, meaning Kent's strength of schedule will take a hit over the rest of the season.

Long Beach State 49ers
Record RPI Mo' Marquee victory
14-3(6-0 Big West) 81 Up Defeated USC 76-66

The 49ers' winning streak is up to 12 games, thanks to an 86-68 win over UC-Santa Barbara after Long Beach State trailed by 13 in the first half. Center Mate Milisa and forward Rudy Williams are leading the charge. The 6-foot-11 Milisa, who averaging 19.2 points on 62.2 percent shooting, had 21 points in the win over the Gauchos. Williams, a 6-9 transfer from Dixie (Utah) JC, adds 13.9 points (on 58.6 percent shooting) and 8.2 rebounds, giving the 49ers a frontcourt that some major-conference teams would envy.

St. Bonaventure Bonnies
Record RPI Mo' Marquee victory
13-4 (5-2 A-10) 33 Side Defeated Temple 57-56

Consecutive road losses to Fordham and George Washington had the Bonnies rattled, but they bounced back with a 40-point humiliation of Rhode Island. Catching Temple for first in the Atlantic 10 East might be out of the question (St. Bonaventure trails the Owls by a game and a half), but the Atlantic 10's overall RPI strength could be what eventually tips the scales in their favor. The Atlantic 10 is seventh, ahead of the Mountain West, Mid-American and WAC.

Tulane Green Wave
Record RPI Mo' Marquee victory
15-4 (4-3 C-USA) 39 Up Defeated N.C. State 73-62

Two wins boosted Tulane's RPI from 46 to 39, and a win over DePaul on Wednesday will give the Green Wave another big win in the eyes of the public. UAB has risen to tie Tulane for first place in C-USA's National Division. The two don't face each other until Feb. 12, one of the few big games Tulane can point to on its schedule.

Vanderbilt Commodores
Record RPI Mo' Marquee victory
13-4 (4-3 SEC) 18 Side Defeated Florida 87-77

The Gators delivered some payback to the Commodores, thumping Vandy 89-63 to drop them to fourth in the SEC East. But that's not a bad place to be right now, considering Vanderbilt is coming off a stretch of games against Kentucky (twice), at Tennessee, LSU, at South Carolina and at Florida. The Commodores don't play another ranked team until they face Auburn at home on Feb. 16.
