Shine starts for injured Holloway

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Seton Hall point guard Shaheen Holloway, who did not take part in the team's shootaround Friday, will not play in the Pirates' NCAA Tournament East Region semifinal against Oklahoma State, reported ESPN's David Aldridge.

Sophomore Ty Shine took Holloway's place in the starting lineup.

Pirates' Kaukenas ailing
Seton Hall guard Rimas Kaukenas returned to practice Wednesday after sitting out Tuesday's session as a precaution that he might have been contagious because of possible strep throat, a school spokesman said.

Kaukenas is feeling better, although the school still has not received results of medical tests on whether he has strep throat. He is taking antibiotics.

Junior forward Kevin Wilkins' virus symptoms have cleared up and he has been cleared to play.

Shine, a sophomore, scored a career-high 26 points, hitting 7-of-11 from 3-point range in Seton Hall's upset of second-seeded Temple.

It was Shine's first start of the season and eighth of his career.

Holloway said he had been undergoing about 15 hours of therapy daily to get ready for the Oklahoma State game. Thursday was his first day walking without crutches. Although Holloway said he had increased lateral movement, he did not take part in Thursday's 50-minute practice.

He did not come out for the start of his team's pre-game warmups Friday night, emerging from the locker room about 15 minutes later wearing a sweatsuit with his injured foot in a cushioned boot. Holloway sat slumped in his chair, chin in hand, watching his teammates go through their pre-game drill.

"I've got confidence in Ty and Darius (Lane) if I can't play. I still think we have a good chance of winning," Holloway said Thursday.

If it weren't for Holloway, Seton Hall might already be home.

The Pirates defeated Oregon 72-71 in overtime in the first round when Holloway drove the length of the court and hit a shot high off the glass for the winning basket with 1.9 seconds remaining. Holloway finished with 27 points.

Holloway, an All-Big East second team selection and the Pirates' career assist leader, averaged 13.2 points and 5.6 assists per game and shot 40 percent (48-of-119) from 3-point range.
