MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) -- Poised to beat a Top 20 opponent for the
first time in almost seven years, Kansas State forgot how weak it's
supposed to be.
"We weren't going to surrender," said Larry Reid, who had 31
points and seven assists Saturday night in an 86-78 victory over
Iowa (No. 21 ESPN/USA Today, No. 19 AP).

"It means a lot to us coming in not being ranked and beating a
ranked team."
Phineas Atchison sank four straight free throws in the final 20
seconds as the Wildcats withstood a late rally by the Hawkeyes
(9-1), who were playing just their second road game and their first
outside the state of Iowa.
"This means a lot to the program," said Atchison. "We all
stepped up big."
Kansas State (5-4), coming off a 9-19 season and projected to
finish last in the Big 12 for a second straight year, had not
beaten a Top 20 team since upsetting No. 1 Kansas 68-64 on Jan. 17,
1994.
No ranked non-conference opponent had lost at Kansas State since
No. 8 Minnesota got beat 62-52 in 1981.
The night started miserably for the Hawkeyes, who missed their
first nine shots and had five blocked shots blocked in the first
four minutes.
"I think we've had good shoot-arounds and came in prepared
mentally," said coach Steve Alford.
"But then all of a sudden they got bumped first. They got
blocked out first. They got scored upon first and they didn't know
how to handle it. Give Kansas State a lot of credit."
After Richie Terry's free throws made it 82-74, Iowa's Dean
Oliver drove in for a layup to slice the lead back to six. Ryan
Hogan got it to 82-78 with a driving layup, but Kansas State got
the last four points at the line.
A full-court press rattled the Wildcats in the second half as
their 16-point lead began to melt.
"Every time I looked up it seemed like we were missing a free
throw and they were draining a 3-pointer," first-year Kansas State
coach Jim Wooldridge said. "I'm just very proud of our players."
Iowa got to 70-63 on Glen Worley's bucket with about three
minutes left. Reid then hit a free throw and after a furious flurry
under the bucket, Quentin Buchanan brought the half-filled coliseum
to its feet with an uncontested dunk that made it 73-63.
"They outworked us," Oliver said. "They got all the loose
balls, all the rebounds they needed and all the free throws they
needed. It's amazing that we even made the effort at the end to
make it somewhat of a game."
Iowa's Reggie Evans, the nation's leading rebounder, had his
10th straight double-double with 18 points and 18 rebounds. Evans
was 12-of-19 from the foul line. Luke Recker had 25 points for
Iowa.
"I thought our post defense was bad and I thought our perimeter
defense was bad," Alford said. "We've got to have somebody
(besides Evans) step up."
Iowa shot just 28 percent in the first half as the Wildcats took
a 30-22 lead at halftime.
"I told them not to get down on themselves if they fell behind
early or not to get oo relaxed if we jumped ahead," Wooldridge
said.
