New coach, old result for Rebels

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- UNLV couldn't beat ranked opponents under former coach Bill Bayno and new coach Max Good wasn't able to make it happen in his first game, a 90-72 loss Saturday to Cincinnati (No. 18 ESPN/USA Today, No. 17 AP).

Leonard Stokes scored 23 points as the Bearcats (5-1) rebounded from their first loss of the season, a 69-67 loss on Thursday to Xavier. Steve Logan added 22 points and Kenny Satterfield scored 18.

"We've got some players that had better step up and show some intestinal fortitude," Good said. "Or I can go as deep in the bench as I have to."

Dalron Johnson led the Rebels (3-5) with 17 points, 15 in the second half. Jermaine Lewis added 15 for UNLV, Trevor Diggs scored 13 and leading scorer Kaspars Kambala added 12, but only four in the second half.

"They're not a heck of a lot better than we are, but they are a heck of a lot tougher," Good said. "We played typical of a team that doesn't know how to win."

Good replaced Bill Bayno, who was relieved of his coaching duties on Dec. 12 because of NCAA sanctions imposed against the program. Good was in his second year as an assistant when he was elevated to the top spot.

Bayno was 94-64 as a head coach at UNLV, but hadn't beaten a ranked non-conference opponent since 1995.

"We had them on the ropes in the first half and we let them back in," Cincinnati coach Bob Huggins said. "We had them on the ropes in the second half and we let them back in. We don't handle prosperity well."

The Rebels started fast for Good, jumping out to a 12-2 lead. But Cincinnati then went on a 28-6 run to go ahead 30-18. UNLV rallied to outscore the Bearcats 12-5 in the closing minutes to cut the lead to 43-37 at the half.

"We knew they would come out with a lot of intensity," Satterfield said. "Coach Good is a good motivator."

Cincinnati started the second half on a 15-8 to go ahead 58-45. The Rebels closed to 73-63 with less than 10 minutes remaining, but the Bearcats then went on a 9-1 run.

Satterfield scored 14 points in the final 11:19.

"It just took us a little time to start to execute," Satterfield said. "It's great to get a win. We had a pretty hard practice the other day."
