TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- Altron Jackson scored 29 points and B.B. Waldon added 27 points as South Florida beat Texas (No. 25 ESPN/USA Today) 87-69 on Saturday night.

Waldon scored 12 points, including consecutive baskets on transition, as South Florida (4-3) outscored Texas 25-18 over the first 12 minutes of the second half to take a 70-59 lead. Jackson later put South Florida up by 17 points, at 84-67, on a 3-point play with 2:38 left.

Just over two minutes into the game, Waldon was knocked hard to the floor by Texas' Brian Boddicker. Waldon remained on the floor for several minutes and returned five minutes later.

Maurice Evans had 22 points for Texas (5-2), which had been looking to equal its best start since the 1996-97 season when the Longhorns reached the Sweet 16. Chris Owens added 17 points.

Jackson had 13 first-half points for South Florida, which scored the first nine points of the game and lead by as many as 12 points before a late Texas surge cut the USF advantage to 45-41 at halftime.

Evans scored seven of his 12 first-half points over the final four minutes as Texas closed out the half with a 14-6 run.

South Florida shot 53 percent, hitting on 33 of 62 shots. Texas converted just 39 percent of its shots, hitting 22 of 57.
