Fordham upsets Red Storm at Garden

NEW YORK (AP) -- St. John's coach Mike Jarvis knows all about Fordham's Bevon Robin, who scored the winning basket Saturday as the Rams upset the No. 24 Red Storm 68-67 at Madison Square Garden.

"It was a tough game to lose, won by a great player," Jarvis said after Robin's driving jump shot with 3.7 seconds left proved the difference. "I love to see him have great games, but obviously not against us.

"He's a veteran, cagey, seasoned kid, who knows what it takes to make big plays. He did it today."

Robin led the Rams with 17 points and had eight rebounds and seven assists. He played all 40 minutes.

Fordham coach Bob Hill thought the Rams' 48-36 rebounding edge made the big difference. "I thought the game was going to be decided on the boards," he said. "I said that before the game."

And when Robin broke for the basket, Hill knew it was a game-winner.

"He forced his will on them," the coach said., "He turned the corner and once he did that, I knew he was gone."

Robin said the winning play was a pick and roll with Arseni Kuchinsky springing him free.

"It was a great feeling to accomplish something like this, to beat a ranked team so early in the season when we are tryinbg to turn our program around," Robin said.

The Rams (5-1) blew an eight-point second-half lead and fell behind 67-66 when Willie Shaw dropped in a pair of free throws for St. John's with 18.4 seconds to go.

But Robin came back to nail the winning basket for the Rams, who won their fifth straight. Jason Harris added 11.

Shaw and Anthony Glover topped the Red Storm (4-3) with 18 points apiece.

Fordham led 37-31 at halftime and when Duke Freeman-McKamey was awarded a basket on goaltending at the start of the second half, the Rams had their biggest lead of the game at 39-31.

But Glover hit three baskets to spark an 18-9 run that put St. John's back in front, 49-48 with 12:33 left.

Robin's running jumper got Fordham even at 56 and then St. John's scored seven of the next nine points to build a 65-58 lead on Glover's layup with 4:30 to go. Fordham then outscored the Red Storm 10-2 the rest of the way.
