COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) -- Back at Cole Field House after a
grueling season-opening stretch, Maryland (No. 17 ESPN/USA Today, No. 19 AP) made itself right
at home against overmatched Stony Brook.
Lonny Baxter scored 15 of his 19 points in the first half as the
Terrapins built a 33-point lead and coasted to their 72nd straight
nonconference home win, 107-59 Wednesday night.

Byron Mouton and Juan Dixon also scored 19 for the Terrapins
(4-3), who have won three straight. Maryland's nonconference home
winning streak, which began in 1989, is the longest in the nation.
Maryland began the season with a six-game jaunt through Hawaii,
Wisconsin and Washington, D.C., its longest opening run on the road
since 1941. Home at last, the Terrapins quickly got comfortable
against the Seawolves (3-3).
"We played basketball tonight. There wasn't any goofing around
and we were working hard," Maryland coach Gary Williams said. "It
was good to see. Plus, it was good to get a game where there wasn't
a lot of pressure. We need that once in a while."
Baxter scored off the opening tip and went 6-for-7 from the
field to help Maryland take a 53-20 halftime lead. The Seawolves,
who start three freshmen, went the final 10:52 of the half without
a basket while being outscored 25-2.
"For about the first seven minutes, we did what we had to do to
keep control of the game," Stony Brook coach Nick Macarchuk said.
"But ultimately the turnovers did us in."
Poor shooting didn't help. The Seawolves shot 27 percent in the
first half and had 12 turnovers.
The second half was noteworthy only in that Williams received a
technical foul with 15:06 left and the Terrapins leading 70-26.
Leon Brisport led the Seawolves with 18 points. It was the
third-worst defeat in the history of the program, which moved up to
the Division I level last season.
"We really don't take anything from this game," Macarchuk
said. "The players are disappointed and down and I'm upset and
angry."
Baxter made his first four shots from the field and Dixon hit
successive 3-pointers to cap a 8-0 spurt that put the Terrapins up
19-9.
It was 24-16 before Baxter and Mouton both scored six points and
Danny Miller connected from beyond the arc during a 16-2 run that
provided Maryland with a 22-point cushion.
With three minutes left in the half, Baxter had six field goals
and five free throw attempts compared to seven baskets and four
foul shots for the Seawolves.
Maryland's Steve Blake added to the Seawolves' misery by sinking
a desperation heave from just inside the midcourt line as the first
half ended.
Blake finished with a career-high 13 assists. Dixon, who made
half his 12 shots, also had three assists and three steals.
"It was definitely good to be home. It was the key to
tonight," Dixon said. "This was our first game in front of the
students and the home crowd, and we had that advantage. It was good
to get home after starting the year on the road."
