  RECAP | BOX SCORE

SYRACUSE, New York (Ticker) -- Preston Shumpert scored 30 points and Damone Brown added 24 as 14th-ranked Syracuse cruised to a 105-75 victory over intrastate foe Albany.

Shumpert scored five points in Syracuse's game-opening 11-0 run and the hot-shooting Orangemen (8-0) never looked back en route to their eighth straight victory.

Shumpert (13-of-19) and Brown (11-of-16) were too much for the Great Danes to handle, shooting a combined 24-of-35 from the field.

"It was pretty fun today," Shumpert said. "Offensively, we played very well and defensively we got into their faces from the beginning."

Overall, Syracuse shot 56 percent (43-of-76), including 52 percent (12-of-23) from beyond the arc. DeShaun Williams added 17 points, making 5-of-11 3-pointers.

"We can score from inside or outside," Williams said. "We have a complete team and different types of weapons. We're enjoying this as much as the fans."

Syracuse point guard Allen Griffin scored only two points but had 12 assists and three steals while committing no turnovers.

"We had 34 assists, which shows how unselfishly we played," Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said. "Guys looked for each other."

Syracuse, which is in the midst of a nine-game homestand, eclipsed the century mark for the first time this season. Its previous high was a 92-84 victory over DePaul in the first round of the Great Alaska Shootout.

With much of its offense coming from the perimeter, Syracuse made only 7-of-11 free throws. But the Orangemen posted a 45-31 edge on the boards and had 13 steals.

"Maybe I'm an old-fashioned eternal optimist but I really thought we had a chance to play better," first-year Albany coach Scott Beeten said. "But obviously we were overmatched talent-wise. They are very good. They are extremely well-coached."

Ed Gallup had 20 points and Dave Schloss 16 for Albany (2-5), which has lost all three meetings with Syracuse. The Great Danes' two wins this season have come against Green Mountain and Harvard.

Albany closed to 33-25 on Gallup's 3-pointer with 7:18 left in half but Syracuse closed with a 20-8 spurt to take a 53-33 halftime lead. During that spurt, Williams hit two 3-pointers and Brown and Shumpert added five points apiece.

"Coming off six games in 10 days, it's difficult to maintain your intensity level and be successful," Boeheim said.

But the Orangemen did not let down, starting the second half with a 10-2 burst to open a 63-35 lead on Williams' 3-pointer with 17:45 to play.

Syracuse opened its biggest lead at 102-64 on a 3-pointer by walk-on Rob McClanaghan with 3:10 remaining.

"We did a good job executing on offense," Brown said. "Except for a few lapses, we did a good job on defense, too."
