Williams leads 3-point barrage

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Jason Williams didn't know how many 3-pointers he had. Temple coach John Chaney just knew top-ranked Duke had a lot.

Duke's Jason Williams drilled 8-of-10 from beyond the 3-point arc on his way to 30 points Saturday.

Williams had a career-high 30 points and was 8-for-10 from beyond the arc to lead the Blue Devils to a 93-68 victory over Temple (No. 15 ESPN/USA Today, No. 17 AP) on Saturday night.

"It was weird. I was so into the game. I wanted to beat them so bad. When they told me I had eight, I said `Wow,' " Williams said after falling one short of the school record for 3-pointers.

Eight days after the teams battled to a two-point classic in the championship game of the Preseason NIT, Duke (7-0) tied the school record with 17 3-pointers.

"I felt like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Every time I looked up somebody was shooting at me," Chaney said. "I've never seen a college team as good as that one. I would love to coach that team."

That task falls to Mike Krzyzewski and he was smiling broadly after the easy win before a sellout crowd of 19,455 at the First Union Center.

"We got good shots because the kids made the extra pass," Krzyzewski said. "We shot really well. Sometimes you're just lucky and shoot really well. I thought we played great and shot unbelievably."

In the first meeting, which Duke won 63-61 at Madison Square Garden, the Blue Devils were 8-for-27 from beyond the arc. Their first eight field goals Saturday night were 3-pointers as they led 24-15 with 7:59 left in the first half.

Led by Williams' 6-for-6 effort, Duke was up 47-25 over Temple (4-3) at halftime, going 11-for-18 from 3-point range.

Williams hit his first seven 3-point attempts and he finished one behind the school record, set by Shane Battier in the season-opening win over Princeton.

Williams entered the game shooting 29 percent (11-for-37) from 3-point range.

"Williams is absolutely the best point guard in the country the way he can drive and shoot," Chaney said. "He made the changes. Last time he would penetrate, probe. This time he shot. We concentrated strictly on trying to cut off the inside and he made the proper adjustment."

The Blue Devils finished 17-for-30 on 3s, matching the school record set against North Carolina on March 3, 1997, and matched against Clemson last March 9.

"This is as good an outside shooting team as I've had," said Krzyzewski, who is in his 21st season at Duke. "We can put four shooters out there at once; we can be dangerous in that respect."

Battier finished with 18 points and nine rebounds, while freshman Chris Duhon had four points and 12 assists.

"Chris loves to pass and he got a lot of confidence from the way he was playing (Lynn) Greer," Krzyzewski said. "He's a kid who doesn't get tired. Their zone does give you time to see things."

David Hawkins and Greer each had 15 points for Temple, but Greer was 6-for-23 from the field.

Williams' sixth 3 of the game gave the Blue Devils a 39-21 lead with 2:55 left in the first half and he followed that with a layup off a nice pass from Duhon eight seconds later for the first 20-point lead of the game.

Duke shot 64 percent in the first half (16-for-25), while holding Temple to 33 percent (12-for-36), including Greer's 3-for-15 effort.

"Our plan was just to attack the zone through penetration and kicks," Krzyzewski said. "We thought we might get the ball inside more but they took that away."

The Blue Devils' first points from a non-starter came with 8:59 to play and appropriately enough it was a 3-pointer by Nick Horvath that made it 75-49.

"This team is still very much a developing team," Krzyzewski said. "Our bench has to contribute more so we can become a deeper team."

The only positive statistic for Temple was its 19 offensive rebounds but Duke finished with a 32-31 advantage off the boards overall.

"They just took us apart. They handed us our heads," Chaney said. "We'll go back with our heads tucked between our legs and try to pick it up in the morning. I figure around January this team will be a little better than they are now."

The crowd was the largest to ever see a college game in Pennsylvania, breaking the 19,372 which were in the same building to see Notre Dame-Villanova in 1997.
