Hinrich leads rout of Division II Washburn

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) _ Kirk Hinrich hit his first seven shots, including five 3-pointers, and No. 3 Kansas routed Division II contender Washburn 99-56 Saturday night for victory No. 500 in storied Allen Fieldhouse.

Since opening Allen in 1955 during Wilt Chamberlain's freshman year, the Jayhawks are 500-98 at home.

Rarely in Allen's 45 years has any opponent been more outmanned than the Ichabods of Topeka, Kan., who are ranked No. 7 in Division II.

The Jayhawks (5-0) stretched their November winning streak to 34 while shooting over 50 percent for the fifth straight game and outrebounding Washburn (2-1) 53-38.

Hinrich, a sophomore point guard, finished with a career-high 22 points. He was 7-of-8 from the floor and 5-of-6 from 3-point range and also had six assists and five rebounds. Kenny Gregory had 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting and Eric Chenowith had 19 points and 17 rebounds.

While winning their first five games for the second year in a row, the Jayhawks have scored fewer than 92 points only once. In beating North Dakota, Boise State and Washburn during the present five-game home stand, they have averaged almost 100 points.

Gregory, a 6-foot-5 senior, staged an impressive offensive show, hitting long jumpers and short jumpers, gliding in for finger rolls and forceful dunks and once, during a 10-0 run in the first half, befuddling two defenders with a turnaround left-handed jumper beneath the basket. He was 4-for-5 in the first half.

The Jayhawks out of rhythm on the free throw line. They were 8-for-20 while taking a 48-25 halftime lead and finished 18-of-35.

Texas transfer Luke Axtell, who missed the first four games with an injured ankle, came off the bench early in the first half and hit his first shot, a 3-pointer that made it 15-6 and drew a huge roar from the sellout crowd.

Ryan Murphy had 18 points for the Ichabods. Ewan Auguste, the Ichabods' No. 8 all-time scorer who had been averaging almost 18 points, fouled out with 12:06 to play after scoring just six.
