Georgia can't keep up with Cardinal

BAYAMON, Puerto Rico (AP) -- Casey Jacobsen had 22 points and five rebounds as fifth-ranked Stanford beat Georgia 71-58 on Saturday to win the Puerto Rico Shootout.

"They're a well disciplined basketball team," Georgia coach Jim Harrick said. "They don't beat themselves. We're still at a stage where we beat ourselves."

Stanford's Jason Collins wasn't a blur, but he did score nine points and grab eight rebounds Saturday.

Harrick and Stanford coach Mike Montomery credited Jacobsen and Ryan Mendez for powering the Cardinal offense. Mendez finished with 17 points, including two big 3-pointers.

"Mendez got a couple of baskets on the transition and then Jacobsen just scored," Harrick said. "We stopped everything but Jacobsen just kept coming and I think he said, 'I'm going to beat you."'

With 12:03 to go in the half, Jacobsen scored the Cardinal's next seven points to open up a 15-point lead, 55-40.

"In basketball you're always trying to search for the flow. I think we found it tonight," Jacobsen said. "We started getting easy looks and once we're ahead our defense will sustain whatever lead we have, we have confidence in that."

The sophomore swingman completed a brilliant three-game stretch in the United States territory. Jacobsen had 16 points in a Thanksgiving Day triumph over Old Dominion and added 22 in Friday's 83-60 rout of Memphis before connecting on 7-of-10 shots in 31 minutes Saturday.

Montgomery said his team was slightly hampered by injuries, with Jarron Collins slowed by back spasms and twin brother Jason hobbled by a sore knee. Curtis Borchart also has been playing with a foot injury. Montgomery said he's looking forward to the four day's rest before the Cardinal faces UC Riverside.

"In stretches we were impatient on offense and I thought that hurt us a little bit but when we moved the ball we took advantage and ran the score up a little bit," said Montgomery, who is in his 15th season with the Cardinal.

"Because we had some of the guys injured we tried to preserve them as much as we could. We'd play the three-quarter press and then drop back into the zone. Sometimes the zone can buy you time and take the pressure off of the injured."

Overall, Montgomery said he'd like his team to learn to be more aggressive.

"I thought we played well but we can do better," he said. "There've been times when we've had a lead and been complacent. We need to stick the dagger in."
