BAYAMON, Puerto Rico (AP) -- D.A. Layne scored 21 points and
Georgia overcame a nine-point deficit to earn a 65-60 victory over Utah (No. 14 ESPN/USA Today, No. 13 AP) on
Friday in the semifinals of the Puerto Rico Shootout.
"Our defense was good in this game and in the first game,"
Bulldogs coach Jim Harrick said. "Sure they're a bigger team, but
we outrebounded them because we're quicker jumpers. In the last 12
minutes, we locked them up."
Shon Coleman added 20 points and seven rebounds for Georgia
(2-2), which will face No. 5 Stanford on Saturday in the
championship game. The Cardinals beat Memphis 83-60.
Nate Althoff and Chris Burgess each scored 12 points for Utah
(2-1)
Utah led 45-36 with 12:13 remaining, but Georgia used a 12-2 run
to take a 48-47 lead with 8:43 left. Coleman scored five straight
points during the run.
Utah fought back to tie it three times before Georgia scored
five straight points to take a 57-52 lead on Coleman's free throw
with 3:42 left.
Althoff completed a three-point play to cut the lead to two with
3:22 showing, but Georgia pulled away as Coleman scored and drew
two fouls.
"We need to work on who's handling the ball and who's taking
the shots," Utah assistant coach Dick Hunsaker said.
"It was a tough game. I feel bad for the players. They played
hard and our defense tried to take them out of their offense, but
they got a lot of second shots. They knocked us off our screens.
They're a very physical team."
