LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) -- Maryland's veterans gave Louisville's
rookies a lesson in big-time basketball.
Terence Morris had 24 points and nine rebounds and Lonny Baxter
added 18 points and seven rebounds to lead Maryland (No. 6 ESPN/USA Today, AP) to a
95-73 victory over Louisville on Monday in the opening round of the
Maui Invitational.
The Terrapins (1-0), who shot 61 percent from the field,
advanced to Tuesday's semifinals against Illinois (No. 8 ESPN/USA Today, AP), a 74-69 winner over UNLV.
Morris, one of five returning starters for Maryland, had 16
points in the first half as the Terrapins took a 52-38 lead by
shooting 20-for-33 from the field (60.6 percent).
"The first game is always tough because no matter how good
you've looked in practice you're not sure until you've been in a
game situation," Maryland coach Gary Williams said. "I wasn't
sure how we would come out but we did what we had to do -- get the
ball in to Lonny and Terence."
Louisville started two freshmen at forward as it replaced its
entire front line from last season.
"Coming in we knew we'd have trouble with their front line and
we certainly did early when they either scored or drew fouls,"
Louisville coach Denny Crum said. "We thought we'd front them but
we didn't do well. In analyzing this game it was good for our guys
to learn from this experience."
Morris, who finished 10-for-16 from the field, had five points
in a 9-0 run that gave Maryland a 19-8 lead and Louisville (1-1)
never got closer than seven points the rest of the way.
Maryland stretched its lead to 20 points in the opening five
minutes of the second half. The biggest lead was 92-63 with 3:37
left, when Drew Nicholas banked in a 3-pointer as the shot clock
expired.
Juan Dixon and Byron Mouton each had 15 points for Maryland and,
like Baxter, they were both 6-for-10 from the field.
"We're fortunate we have a lot of ways to score but the ball
has to go to the right people and it did tonight," Williams said.
Reece Gaines had 22 points for Louisville, while the first-year
forwards -- Luke Whitehead and Ellis Myles -- had 14 and 11 points,
respectively, and each grabbed six rebounds.
"We have to learn that players of the caliber of Morris and
Baxter can't get the ball where they want to catch it," Crum said.
"They'll learn from this game. They just need to keep working and
learning."
Marques Maybin, the Cardinals' leading scorer last season at
14.7 points per game, had 25 points in the opener against Hawaii.
Against Maryland, though, he was 2-for-11 from the field and had
nine points.
"We were concerned he could get 25 against us," Williams said
of Maybin. "We put so much emphasis on that that Gaines got open
several times and made the shots."
The loss ended Louisville's eight-game winning streak in the
state of Hawaii. That run started with the third-place game in the
1989 Maui Invitational, and continued with titles in the 1993
Rainbow Classic and 1996 Big Island Invitational, as well as the
victory at Hawaii last Friday.
