McDonald's 19 points pace Stanford

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) -- Mike McDonald has been told to look for more open shots this season. He's taken that advice to heart.

McDonald converted a career-best five 3-pointers and finished with 19 points as Stanford (No. 5 ESPN/USA Today and AP) won its 13th straight season opener with a 100-49 rout of Division II San Francisco State on Sunday night.

"We've been after him to hit the open shot and not be afraid of it," Stanford coach Mike Montgomery said. "We tell him to shoot those. For us it's a major plus to have all five positions that can score."

Casey Jacobsen and Curtis Borchardt each scored 14 points for the Cardinal, whose 51-point margin of victory matched the third-largest in school history.

DeKeithi Walton scored eight of the Gators' first 12 points and was held scoreless the rest of the way. Jack MacLeod-Roemer added 10.

San Francisco State was within 11-5 with 15:56 remaining in the first half, but Stanford reeled off 28 straight points over the next nine minutes to put the game out of reach.

"It's just hard playing them because they're so physical," MacLeod-Roemer said. "They have so much over us. It helps to see how they play because you understand and recognize what you have to do. We should schedule a game like this every year. It's good for us."

McDonald scored his 15 points in the first eight minutes of the game.

"I'm normally not looking to shoot every time down court," the point guard said. "But Casey was penetrating, and leaving me open. The shots just came to me tonight."

The Cardinal shot 71 percent from the field in the first half, and 60 for the game.

Stanford held a 39-5 lead with just under seven minutes left in the first half and led 54-17 at the break.

"We were anxious to play new faces," Jacobsen said. "We've been going at each other for so long, we needed to get out on the court and show what we could do."

The Cardinal continued to increase the lead in the second half, scoring 15 unanswered points for an 82-26 margin. The Cardinal built a 97-34 lead with 3:17 left.

"It's a positive thing for us," San Francisco State coach Charlie Thomas said. "It helps us help ourselves. We get national exposure, and it helps our scholarship fund because of the guaranteed money we get."

The Gators are 32-159 against Division I teams.

Jarron Collins added 12 points and eight rebounds for Stanford.
