KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Tennessee (No. 8 ESPN/USA Today, No. 9 AP) has played two
in-state schools to warm up for No. 19 Wisconsin. Coach Jerry Green
hopes it has been enough.
The Volunteers (2-0) opened the season Friday with an 88-66 win
over Chattanooga and then beat East Tennessee State 102-76 Sunday. Tennessee will face the Badgers at home Tuesday night.
"Everyone wants to see just how good we are, and I do, too,"
Green said. "This was a good way to get ready for a tough test."
One good sign for Tennessee going into the matchup of ranked
teams is the number of Vols who can score.
Vincent Yarbrough scored 18 points to lead seven Tennessee
players in double figures against East Tennessee State (1-1).
Charles Hathaway, Harris Walker and Marcus Haislip each scored
12 points, and Isiah Victor, Tony Harris and Terrence Woods had 11
apiece for the Vols. Victor also had 10 rebounds. Walker and
Haislip didn't miss any of their shots.
"I liked the way we shared the ball. Sharing like that makes it
harder for them to guard us," Green said.
Tennessee, playing its second game of a five-game homestand,
has won 29 straight nonconference home games and three in a row
over the Buccaneers.
Dimeco Childress led ETSU with 15 points, D.J. McDuffie had 14
and Ryan Lawson 11.
After the Vols built a 55-28 halftime lead, Tennessee stretched
its lead to 71-31 with a 16-3 run four minutes into the second
half.
A total of 53 fouls were called, 29 against the Buccaneers. Tennessee finished 31-of-39 from the foul
line, ETSU was 14-of-27.
The Vols have been called for a total of 55 fouls in the last two
games, which were called tightly.
Yarbrough said those type of calls may help Tennessee against
Wisconsin, which is known for its slow, defensive style.
"I hear they are a real physical team. But with how the refs
have been calling lately, them being physical will hurt them down
here," he said.
Free-throw shooting dominated the final two minutes of the first
half. Walker's tip-in basket that made it 51-25 with 2:16 left was
the final field goal of the half.
Tennessee took a 21-9 lead with 13:37 to go after hitting five
3-pointers, two each by Harris and Woods, then used a 16-8 run over
the next eight minutes to take a 20-point lead. Yarbrough's basket
at 5:54 put Tennessee ahead 37-17 and started an 18-11 run to
finish the first half.
The teams combined for nine turnovers in the first five minutes
and 25 in the first half.
