Arizona State gets past Winthrop

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) -- Arizona State coach Rob Evans wanted his Sun Devils to "grow up some" during the NABC Classic. Winthrop coach Gregg Marshall wanted to show off his team that was trying for a third straight NCAA berth.

Neither got what they wanted in the NABC consolation game Saturday.

Arizona State (1-1) got the 76-68 win, but looked raw and young against dogged Winthrop. Winthrop (0-2) showed poise in trying to rally down the stretch, but saw Marshall get ejected after two technicals in the final 11.5 of play.

"We didn't finish the game exactly the way I wanted us to finish it, but when you have a young team, those are the sorts of things you have to go through," Evans said. "You're talking about 18- and 19-year-olds. It's just something they have to learn."

Arizona State's lone senior, Alton Mason, sparked the Sun Devils with a career-high 18 points. He made 9 of 10 free throws in the final 1:38 to help ice the win.

"He's a very heady player when he's concentrating," Evans said. "I have been really impressed with his play the last two games and the exhibition games."

Mason led four Sun Devils in double figures. Shawn Redhage added 17, followed by Awvee Storey's 15 and Donnell Knight's 13.

Redhage scored 7 points and hit his last five free throws during the final 3:05.

Storey and Redhage both grabbed 7 rebounds to help Arizona State take a 35-22 edge in rebounding. The Sun Devils also made more free throws than Winthrop attempted, making 29 of 41. Winthrop hit 20 of 28.

"Winthrop is a very athletic team. They fought hard and created some difficult matchup situations for us," Evans said. "But our guys played hard, especially on the glass."

Greg Lewis led Winthrop with 14 points, while Roger Toxey and Tywan Harris each had 11.

Arizona State limited Winthrop to 21-for-47 shooting from the floor, but barely did better, making just 22 of 47.

"Our shots weren't falling," Marshall said. "We knocked in some long ones last night, and tonight we didn't."

Winthrop, which lost to North Carolina 66-61 on Friday night, was down 34-26 at halftime and trailed by at least 10 points three times in the second half.

The Eagles closed to 61-57 after a layup and free throw by Marcus Stewart. But the Sun Devils scored the next eight points.

Winthrop rallied again on a 3-pointer by Toxey and two baskets in 3.4 seconds by Anthony Moore and Tyrone Walker to cut the Sun Devils' lead to 68-64 with 12 seconds left. Mason hit 3 of 4 free throws and Redhage 4 of 4 in the last 11.5 to ice the game.

"We just couldn't get the lead," Marshall said. "We wanted to play with the lead and we just were not able to do that."
