No Cleaves, no problem for Spartans

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Mateen Cleaves didn't make his return for Michigan State on Tuesday night. Turned out the Spartans didn't need him.

Charlie Bell
Charlie Bell dished out 11 assists and scored seven points for the Spartans.

With the injured All-American once again watching in street clothes, Morris Peterson scored 22 points as Michigan State (No. 6 USA Today, No. 8 AP) cruised to a 96-63 victory over Mississippi Valley State.

"We wanted to come out and show some emotion," said Peterson, who added eight rebounds. "Charlie (Bell) did a great job running the team and finding the right guy at the right time."

Michigan State (9-3) did it from the outside in the first half, going 8-of-12 from 3-point range. Mississippi Valley State (1-9) came out in a zone defense to try to take away the Spartans' inside game, but Peterson responded with three 3-pointers in the first three minutes.

After a layup by Jason Richardson and another by Peterson, the Spartans led 16-0 just 4:33 into the game.

Senior guard Johnny Dotson got Mississippi Valley State on the scoreboard 5:09 into the game. Mike Chappell then scored 11 straight points to give Michigan State a 28-4 lead 8:23 into the first half. He hit his fourth 3-pointer of the game to give the Spartans their biggest first-half lead, 50-15 with 1:59 left.

Michigan State led 50-20 at halftime. Junior Dewayne Jefferson was the only one who could penetrate the Spartans' man-to-man defense, scoring 14 first-half points on 6-of-13 shooting. Jefferson finished with 24 points, despite playing just nine minutes in the second half after sustaining a cut over his left eyebrow 3:45 into the second half.

"We were beaten by a much better basketball team that is well-coached, and we caught them at the wrong time too," Delta Devils coach Lafayette Stribling said. "They deserve to be ranked a little higher and I'm sure they will be as the season goes on."

Michigan State switched to the inside game in the second half, as junior Andre Hutson scored 15 of his 19 points in the final 20 minutes. The Spartans led by as many as 42 points twice in the second half. Michigan State shot 17 3-pointers in the game, one less than Mississippi Valley State, but the Spartans made 10 3s; the Delta Devils just five.

"That's kind of surprising -- we almost took as many as them," Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said. "I thought we had good 3s, they were not forced. Morris got on a roll early and started us out, and then a lot of other guys step up."

Chappell added 18 points for the Spartans and Bell had 11 assists and no turnovers filling in for Cleaves, who practiced lightly Monday. Richardson also scored 11 points.

Dotson added 12 points for Mississippi Valley State, while freshman Jamar Blackmon had 11 and junior Henry Jordan 10.
