Dupay, Miller answer Gators coach's call

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) -- Florida coach Billy Donovan has been clear in his criticism of Mike Miller and Teddy Dupay this season.

Florida's Mike Miller, left, goes up for two as High Point's Tim Wilson can only watch.

Dupay had been taking too many shots, and Miller not enough, Donovan said.

The two seemed to get Donovan's message Sunday in Florida's 109-60 defeat of High Point. Miller scored 20 points on 9-of-14 shooting and Dupay had 16 points and eight assists for the Gators (No. 8 ESPN/USA Today, No. 9 Associated Press).

"Today was just a matter of hitting open shots and getting these guys to run the lane," Dupay said. "I was just trying to relate better with everybody so I could get them where I need them."

Miller and Dupay led seven Gators in double figures, with freshman Donnell Harvey scoring 12 points and grabbing a season-high 15 rebounds.

Miller entered the game second on the Gators in scoring, averaging 14 points a game, but Donovan said he wanted Miller to be more assertive offensively.

The criticism came after Florida's last game when Miller had two points on one shot in the first half against Bethune-Cookman. Miller rebounded in the second half for 12 points, finishing with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Dupay hit all four of his 3-point shots.

But Donovan was more impressed with Dupay's season-high eight assists. Earlier this season, Donovan benched Dupay and reserve point guard Brett Nelson for much of the second half in a 79-68 loss to Purdue for not running the team's offense and improvising too often.

Against High Point, Nelson and Dupay combined for 16 assists.

"There has been too much made with me being disappointed in our point guards," Donovan said. "Brett is a freshman and Teddy is a sophomore whose role is changing. Your team is going to go the way the point guards go."

The point guards, with help from Miller, led the Gators to a 54-29 halftime lead against the Panthers, and Florida opened the second half with a 25-5 run.

Miller, who had 14 points at the break, didn't score in the second half until 6:16 remained when he hit two free throws.

For his final points of the game, Miller dunked an alley-oop pass from Dupay.

Geordie Cullen led the Panthers with 15 points.
