TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -- Held to the same standard as the starters, Arizona's reserves didn't fare well against Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.

"The starters did a very good job of moving the ball," coach Lute Olson said after watching his bench corps play more than half the game against the Jaguars and shoot 30 percent. "Our defense was solid, but our reserve offense was horrendous."

Nevertheless, the Wildcats (No. 3 ESPN/USA Today, No. 4 Associated Press) won easily, leading by double digits throughout the second half of Monday night's 70-41 victory. It was their first game after playing three top 10 teams in a seven-day span.

Richard Jefferson scored 14 points, Rick Anderson and Jason Gardner had 11 apiece and Loren Woods scored 10 -- with Jefferson, Anderson and Woods playing half the game or less.

"This was a learning experience," Gardner said. "Everyone got playing time and did good things. It was a total team effort. It was fun."

Charles Price, who had 15 points and six rebounds for the Jaguars, felt the same way.

"We are going to get better from this," he said. "There is no one in our conference (Mid-Continent) even near Arizona, so this was a good test for us."

The Wildcats (8-1) won their second straight after a loss to Connecticut on Dec. 7, sending IUPUI (1-7) to its fifth loss in five road games.

The mismatch gave Olson a chance to rest top scorer and rebounder Michael Wright, who hyperextended his right knee against Connecticut. Wright started but played only 13 minutes in all.

The Wildcats scored the first 11 points of the game and never looked back.

Anderson started the surge with a 3-pointer and a short jumper, and the Jaguars never came closer than five. IUPUI trailed 19-13 after Price's jumper with 7:51 remaining, but Anderson capped a 7-0 surge with a 3-pointer with 4:08 to play.

Arizona's lead reached 53-23 on Woods' dunk 5:50 into the second half.

Despite trailing by double figures most of the game, Jaguars coach Ron Hunter felt his squad held up well.

"I know they wanted to rest their starters quite a bit, but I am not sure that they were able to," Hunter said.

Olson said he has work to do with his reserves, and the numbers backed him up. They scored only 18 points, and six were from Gilbert Arenas, who shares starting time with Anderson.

But Jefferson saw the bright side.

"Our bench benefited by being out there," he said. "They had a chance to come in and get some minutes. When you're playing big games all the time, it's hard for them to get comfortable."
