BOX SCORE
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Texas has the size to dominate teams near the basket. Coach Rick Barnes is just looking for the right moves from his big players. Looking frustrated and out of synch for much of the game, Texas (No. 12 ESPN/USA Today, No. 10 AP) had just enough Saturday to fight off pesky San Diego 76-66 on Saturday night. "We're close on offense, we're just not there yet," Barnes said. "Our post guys are more the problem right now than our perimeter players. They don't move." Too much standing around and letting teams defend them, Barnes said. San Diego (4-3) used 14 players to crash the middle with double- and triple-teams of Texas center Chris Mihm and forward Gabe Muoneke. And for a while it worked, as both players picked up four fouls. Muoneke was just 1-of-8 shooting in the first half before coming on late to finish with 13 points. Mihm was just 2 of 11 from the floor but was perfect on eight foul shots for 12 points and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds. "Teams aren't even guarding our guards," Muoneke said. "We're going to get double- and triple-teamed regardless of how good our guards are." Kelly tied his career-high for points on 5-of-10 shooting from the floor and was 7 of 8 from the line. His 10 points during a 21-2 Texas run in the first half sparked the Longhorns to 23-7 lead midway through the first half. With 11:42 left in the first half, San Diego has as many turnovers (seven) as points. The Toreros played without leading scorer Dana White, who injured his knee in practice earlier in the week. White averages 14 points. Andre Laws led San Diego with 17 points. Texas led 38-27 at halftime but couldn't put the game completely out of reach as the Longhorns went for long stretches without a basket. After taking a 45-30 lead on a Chris Mihm jumper, Texas made just one field goal over the next eight minutes. San Diego cut the deficit to 47-39 with 15:27 to play before Texas made six consecutive free throws to push the lead back up to 53-39. Muoneke then scored seven of Texas' next 13 points as the Longhorns maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way. The Longhorns scored 21 points off 21 San Diego turnovers and led by as many as 19 late before the Toreros closed with nine straight points to end the game. "We let them get back in the game," Mihm said. "That's something we need to work on." "I thought we could play with them," said San Diego coach Brad Holland, whose team beat Texas last season. "But they kept the pressure on and we turned the ball over too many times." For Texas, it was a much-needed win after consecutive losses to Arizona and Wisconsin. The latter, a disappointing game on the road in which the Longhorns scored just 45 points, is likely to drop Texas out of the Top Ten this week. Texas next plays at home against Wofford on Dec. 18 before traveling to Utah on Dec. 22.
