Santangelo, Frahm stone cold for Gonzaga

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

CHICAGO (AP) -- Temple coach John Chaney sat at the microphone moaning about the abuse his team just suffered.

He couldn't believe some guy could make it through the Owls' vaunted matchup zone untouched. The kid should at least have a broken leg or something. And that 7-footer dropping 3-pointers, what was that all about?

Imagine how sour Chaney must be when his team loses a game.

"It's a game we should not have won," he said after his Owls (No. 18 ESPN/USA Today, No. 19 AP) beat Gonzaga (unranked ESPN/USA Today, No. 24 AP) 64-48 on Wednesday in the Great Eight.

"They normally do not miss the foul shots they missed tonight. And they normally don't miss the easy shots they missed tonight. If they hit the shots, they walk away with a win."

But the Bulldogs (4-2) didn't make those shots. They were a dismal 6-of-37 (16 percent) from 3-point range, and shot just 31 percent from the floor. Sharpshooters Matt Santangelo and Richie Frahm kept their season-long streak of scoring in double figures alive, but both were horrid from the floor.

Frahm scored 13 points on 5-of-18 shooting, while Santangelo added 12 on 5-of-13 shooting. The two were a combined 3-of-24 from 3-point range.

Mark Karcher led Temple (3-2) with 19 points and Lynn Greer added 14. The Owls were 25-of-60 (42 percent) from the floor.

"We executed the way we needed to, we just missed shots," Santangelo said. "How many times is that going to happen? It's not going to happen every night."

The Owls played their fourth game without point guard Pepe Sanchez, who has a bad ankle, and they definitely aren't the same team without him. They lost games to Indiana and Wake Forest, and had a tough time beating Florida State.

But Gonzaga was just what Temple needed. The Bulldogs were the darlings of the NCAA Tournament last year as they knocked off Minnesota, Stanford and Florida on their way to the West Regional final. But they haven't found the same magic this year, losing back-to-back games to No. 1 Cincinnati and Temple.

Gonzaga couldn't get anything going inside or outside. With Temple using its matchup zone to stop up the middle, the Bulldogs had to go to the perimeter and had no success.

They made just two of their first 14 shots from 3-point range, missing eight straight during an eight-minute stretch in the first half. Shot after shot clanged off the rim or swirled around the basket before tumbling out.

Casey Calvary's 14 points led the Bulldogs. His nine rebounds also led the team.

"They just didn't drop," coach Mark Few said. "I wouldn't trade but maybe two or three (shots) late in the game. I've seen other teams really stifled by that zone and not be able to get good looks. We got good looks. We just couldn't knock them down."

While the Bulldogs were struggling from the floor, Temple was letting it fly. Karcher's layup with 14:04 left in the first half gave the Owls an 8-7 lead and they never trailed again.

Gonzaga tied the game at 14 on Frahm's 3-pointer, but Keaton Sanders answered with a 3-pointer of his own, and Greer connected on back-to-back 3s to give Temple a 23-14 lead with 5:46 left in the first half. It was never close again.

"When we saw they were missing a lot of open shots, we knew they weren't shooting good," Karcher said. "But we knew they'd come back in the second half putting up shots."

The Bulldogs did manage to whittle Temple's lead to 39-32 with 11:31 left in the game on a 3-pointer from Ryan Floyd, but Sanders came through with a basket, Karcher hit another 3.

Still, it wasn't enough to satisfy Chaney.

"I'm praying hard for Sanchez to come back," he said. "If not, we're going to struggle a lot."
