COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) -- Maryland was playing its third game in
four nights, and it showed. So after the Terrapins (No. 19 ESPN/USA Today, No. 21 AP) struggled
mightily to beat Winthrop in overtime on Tuesday night, coach Gary
Williams knew better than to scold his players.
"Hey, blame me. I'm the guy who scheduled these games,"
Williams said after Maryland's 76-65 overtime victory. "We were
fortunate to come back."
Terence Morris scored six of his 19 points in overtime for the
Terrapins, who survived a serious scare in winning their 68th
consecutive non-conference home game.
Maryland trailed 60-52 with six minutes left before rallying to
dispatch the Eagles (4-2), who played with confidence from the
opening tip.
"They came out focused, thinking they have a chance to beat
us," Morris said. "We came out a little flat, and that gave them
confidence. But late in second half, we said enough is enough."
Maryland never led after halftime until Morris opened the
overtime by sinking two free throws. Greg Lewis then made two foul
shots for the Eagles, but a drive by Morris and a jumper by Juan
Dixon put Maryland up 68-64.
It was 70-65 before Morris clinched the victory with a driving
dunk.
Morris finished with 14 rebounds, eight on the offensive end.
Dixon scored 16 points for the Terrapins (7-2) and Lonny Baxter had
13 points and 10 rebounds.
Tyson Waterman scored 22 points and Greg Lewis 14 for Winthrop,
the defending Big South champions. The Eagles are 0-22 against the
Atlantic Coast Conference.
"As we walked off the court, I told them together, we're going
to win a game like this," Winthrop coach Gregg Marshall said. "It
obviously wasn't tonight, but I can feel the day coming."
The Terrapins, who had 28 turnovers in a loss to George
Washington on Sunday, had 10 in the first half and 17 overall.
Maryland's non-conference home winning streak is the longest in the
nation, but No. 23 Kentucky could provide an ample challenge
Saturday night at Cole Field House.
"We knew we couldn't go into the Kentucky game with two
consecutive losses," Dixon said.
Down 60-52, Maryland used a 3-pointer by Danny Miller and four
straight points by Dixon to close to 60-59. Waterman temporarily
stemmed the comeback with a basket, but the Terrapins tied it on a
driving layup by Drew Nicholas with 1:04 to go.
Maryland had the last chance to win in regulation, but Morris
and Dixon both missed 3-pointers in the closing seconds.
Winthrop trailed Dayton by only five points at halftime Saturday
before falling by 27. This time, however, the Eagles outscored
Maryland 14-9 in the first six minutes of the second half to open
up a five-point lead.
After the Terrapins closed to 50-49, Robbie Waldrop and Waterman
hit successive 3-pointers to build the margin to seven. Miller
followed a Maryland timeout with a 3-pointer, but Waldrop answered
with a driving layup and Waterman hit a short jumper to make it
60-52 with 5:58 remaining.
The lead wouldn't last.
The weary Terrapins fell behind 9-2 and 18-11 before Dixon
scored six points in an 18-2 run that made it 29-20. Lewis then
recorded two straight three-point plays in an 11-2 spree that
enabled Winthrop to draw even at halftime.
