BOX SCORE
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) -- As ragged as Georgia looked in its Great Alaska Shootout opener against 10th-ranked Kansas on Thursday night, the Bulldogs weren't out of the game until the final minute.
Kenny Gregory scored 20 points on 10-for-11 shooting and Jeff Boschee went 4-for-5 from 3-point range to lead the Jayhawks (2-0) to an 88-78 win over the Bulldogs. Eight free throws by three different players down the stretch clinched the victory for Kansas, which meets Xavier in the semifinals Friday. The other semifinal pits Washington against Georgia Tech. Kansas had too much size and too many offensive options for the Bulldogs. Drew Gooden added 11 points and Nick Collison had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Jayhawks. "They were a little bit more experienced than we were, and it showed," said Jim Harrick, who is still looking for his first victory as Georgia's coach. "They come at you very hard." But when the Bulldogs were clicking, they gave the Jayhawks all they could handle. "We had a very difficult time guarding them," said Kansas coach Roy Williams, whose team committed 29 fouls. "They kept coming back at us and making plays." D.A. Layne, who scored 17 of Georgia's first 21 points, was the only reason the game didn't turn into a rout in the opening minutes. Layne finished with 22 points, while Anthony Evans contributed 18 points and Shon Coleman 17 points and 11 rebounds. Georgia (0-2) took a 56-55 lead midway through the second half on a steal and drive by Evans. But 20 seconds later Luke Axtell's 3-pointer put the Jayhawks ahead to stay. Coleman carried the Bulldogs for a three-minute span, scoring 11 points and keeping his team within four. But Gregory scored two baskets inside for Kansas, which got late free throws by Collison, Boschee and Gooden. Kansas took an 8-2 lead before Layne hit two jumpers followed by three straight 3-pointers to tie the game at 17 with 12 minutes left in the first half. Georgia then committed turnovers on five straight possessions during an 11-0 Kansas run that put the Jayhawks up 28-17. Layne swished four free throws and Coleman hit a short hook to close the gap to five, but the Jayhawks took advantage of Georgia's sloppy play to quickly rebuild their lead to as much as 13, before the Bulldogs trimmed it to 43-36 at the break.
Georgia will meet Louisville on Friday in the consolation
bracket, with Division II host Alaska Anchorage going up against
Grambling State.
