  RECAP | BOX SCORE

NEW YORK (AP) -- Bootsy Thornton, after missing the first of two free throws, converted the second with 4.8 seconds remaining, giving St. John's a 59-58 victory over Boston College in a Big East Conference game Saturday.

The Red Storm (14-6, 6-3), losers of four of their previous five games and two in a row, played without leading scorer Erick Barkley, who was suspended by the NCAA for violations of general regulations.

Troy Bell of the Eagles (9-12, 1-8), who have lost eight in a row, all by nine or fewer points, led all scorers with 26. Xavier Singletary added 12.

Lavor Postell topped St. John's with 17, and Thornton had 15.

After Postell's 3-point basket gave St. John's a 44-37 lead with 12:12 remaining in the second half, Boston College, behind four points by Uka Agbai, went on a 9-2 spurt, tying the score 46-46 with 9:19 to go.

With 44 seconds left, Chudney Gray's layup gave St. John's a 58-55 lead. Bell's 3-pointer tied the score with 18 seconds to go before Thornton made his game-winning free throw. Bell missed a 12-foot bank shot that rimmed in and out at the buzzer.
