Owls continue mastery of Hawks

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Mark Karcher had 17 points and 11 rebounds and Lamont Barnes had all 15 of his points in the second half as Temple (No. 21 ESPN/USA Today, unranked AP) broke open a close game and gained a 64-51 victory over St. Joseph's on Saturday.

After a 3-pointer by Frank Wilkins brought the Hawks to 33-31 with 13:41 left, the Owls (8-3 overall, 2-0 Atlantic 10) scored the next 13 points, capped by a four-point play by Quincy Wadley to open a 46-31 lead.

The advantage reached 18 when Wadley sank two free throws with 5:10 left. St. Joseph's (6-5, 1-1) got no closer than 13 after that.

Wadley had 12 points and Pepe Sanchez added nine assists and six steals for the Owls, who have won six of their last seven games.

Marvin O'Conner had 14 points and Wilkins 12 for St. Joseph's, which was a dismal 17-for-53 (32 percent) from the field.

The game was close through the first half, with St. Joseph's leading 23-22.

Both teams struggled offensively in the opening period, shooting below 30 percent. St. Joseph's was 8-for-27 (29 percent) while the Owls were 8-for-30 (27 percent). The teams combined to go 5-for-29 from 3-point range.

Temple has won 10 straight and 15 of 16 over St. Joseph's.
