Slaton, Chastain to miss first month of season

Santa Clara junior Danielle Slaton has been selected to the 18-member U.S. Olympic women's soccer team, national team coach April Heinrichs announced Aug. 10.

The roster includes 15 of the 20 members from the 1999 Women's World Cup champion team, including national team veterans Julie Foudy, Mia Hamm, Kristine Lilly and Tiffeny Milbrett.

Slaton, a defender, is the only collegian on the Olympic team, and also its youngest team member. The 20-year-old was an NSCAA/adidas first team All-American in 1999. last season, Santa Clara post its first undefeated regular season and reached the Final Four for the second consecutive year.

Slaton will be joined by defender Brandi Chastain, a 1991 Santa Clara graduate and current Broncos assistant coach, and midfielder Nikki Serlenga, who capped her college eligibility in 1999. Chastain also was a starter on last year's Women's World Cup team, and also a member of the gold-medal winning Olympic team in 1996. At Santa Clara, Serlenga scored 15 goals and tallied 27 assists. She recorded her first hat trick with the national team in June. Aly Wagner, a sophomore midfielder at Santa Clara, also was recently named an alternate.

Six former North Carolina players -- Hamm, Lilly, Carla Overbeck, Lorrie Fair, Siri Mullinix and Cindy Parlow -- also help comprise the Olympic team.

The U.S. Olympic team is paired in a tough Group F that includes Norway, China and Nigeria. The Americans open against Norway, the 1995 World Cup winner, on Sept. 14 in Melbourne. On Sept. 17, the U.S. squad faces China, and wraps up pool play Sept. 20 against Nigeria.

The top two teams from each group -- Australia, Germany, Sweden and Brazil comprise Group E -- advance to the Sept. 24 semifinals. The gold-medal match and consolation game will be played Sept. 28.

In last summer's Women's World Cup, the Americans beat China 1-0 (5-4 on penalty kicks) for the Cup title. The U.S. also scored a 7-1 victory over Nigeria last summer.
