Breaking down this year's rookies

Nov. 1, 2000

We know Kenyon Martin was the first pick in the most recent draft. We know Stromile Swift went No. 2, a high school kid went No. 3 and the Lakers got someone useful when the first round ended. But who is really going to contribute?

That's why we're here, or, part of the reason at least. Rookie Report 2000 has all the answers when it comes to the new group of kiddies in the league. In this the first week of the NBA season, we recap the first round of the draft and project where these guys may fit in. In future Rookie Reports, we'll alter the format.

RECAPPING THE 2000 FIRST-ROUND
Pick, Player Team, Pos./School Proj. Impact Grade, why
1. Kenyon Martin Nets, PF (Cincinnati) Impact: A
Despite bad first night, can score, board and block. A step above everyone else.
2. Stromile Swift Grizzlies, PF (LSU) Impact: B
Grizz taking this slowly, and Swift might not score much at all.
3. Darius Miles Clips, SG (E. St.L HS) Impact: A
Team still stinks, but this kid is a young, polished Garnett
4. Marcus Fizer Bulls, SF (Iowa State) Impact: B-
We still don't know how he fits in with Brand, Mercer and Artest, none a center
5. Mike Miller Magic, SF (Florida) Impact: B
We weren't sure he'd get run, but he's polished and Doc needs a shooter out there
6. DerMarr Johnson Hawks, SG (Cincinnati) Impact: B
He may not be ready, but the Hawks have no choice; he's starting at two-spot
7. Chris Mihm Cavs (from Bulls), C (Texas) Impact: C
The only way he plays big minutes is if Ilgauskas cannot
8. Jamal Crawford Bulls (from Cavs), PG (Michigan) Impact: B-
If you're the Bulls, and you know you stink, don't you throw him in there?
9. Joel Przybilla Bucks (from Rockets), C (Minnesota) Impact: C
George Karl will take his time with this raw kid; We still ask, what was Houston doing?
10. Keyon Dooling Clips (from Magic), PG (Missouri) Impact: C
Jeff McInnis appears to be the starter. Again, why not play the kid and see what occurs?
11. Jerome Moiso Celtics, PF (UCLA) Impact: C
Fact is that Pitino needs to win now; he can't be developing people this season.
12. Etan Thomas Mavs, PF (Syracuse) Impact: B-
Starts year on injured list with toe problem, but real problem is Mavs are deep.
13. Courtney Alexander Mavs (from Magic), SG (Fresno State) Impact: B
Mavs really like him, but again, they have people and believe they can make playoffs now.
14. Mateen Cleaves Pistons, PG (Michigan State) Impact: B
Chucky Atkins is the starter, but Cleaves will get chance when team is languishing in February.
15. Jason Collier Rockets (from Bucks), C (Ga. Tech) Impact: C
Doesn't appear that Rockets will play him much, with Kelvin Cato the main Hakeem backup.
16. Hidayet Turkoglu Kings, SG (Turkey) Impact: C
Down on depth chart behind Christie and Nick Anderson, and defense won't help him get time.
17. Desmond Mason Sonics, SG (Okla. State) Impact: A
Plenty of people rate him darkhorse Rookie of Year pick; Defender pushed Brent Barry to bench.
18. Quentin Richardson Clips, SG (DePaul) Impact: B
He can score, but that doesn't mean he'll play; One of numerous kids on young Clips.
19. Jamaal Magliore Hornets, C (Kentucky) Impact: C
Will see even less time than now -- or no time -- when Derrick Coleman returns to deep frontcourt.
20. Speedy Claxton 76ers, PG (Hofstra) Impact: --
Will miss season with torn up knee; Might've pushed Snow aside as starting point, impact could've been an A.
21. Morris Peterson Raptors, SG (Mich. State) Impact: B+
With loss of McGrady, the mature Mo Pete will definitely play for Vince's team.
22. Donnell Harvey Mavs (from Knicks), SF (Florida) Impact: C
Mavs have too many players, and this guy will get caught in numbers game.
23. DeShawn Stevenson Jazz, SG (Wash. Union HS) Impact: C
Don't misread this impact; This kid will be a player, but not this year when Jazz have a shot.
24. Dalibor Bagaric Bulls, C (Croatia) Impact: C
Big man starts year on injured list with knee problem, but isn't ready for NBA game yet anyway.
25. Iakovos Tsakalidis Suns, C (Greece) Impact: C
Suns stole him, then got him signed, but he's still a year away from any minutes.
26. Mamadou N'diaye Nuggets, C (Auburn) Impact: C
On injured list with a groin problem. In reality, he should be getting Terry Davis' minutes.
27. Primoz Brezec Pacers, C (Slovenia) Impact: --
Won't be seen anywhere near Indianapolis this season.
28. Erick Barkley Blazers, PG (St. John's) Impact: C
Made the team, which is an accomplishment. Getting in a game is a bigger one.
29. Mark Madsen Lakers, PF (Stanford) Impact: C
Rookie of the Year? No. But he'll play, and he might end up getting the ring.
