Rankings as of Tuesday, Jan. 11

Kevin Garnett, Keon Clark, Roy Rogers
Garnett and the Wolves kicked up 12 spots this week.
This was a tough week to do the Power Rankings, thanks to the Timberwolves, Bulls and Grizzlies. Because Minnesota beat the current No. 2 and 3 teams on our list, and won in Detroit and Philly -- each team's lone loss of the week -- they originally made a staggering jump from 18 to 8. Then we looked closer at the Heat and Knicks, and jumped Garnett's team to 6. In the second 10, the Hornets lost all five of their games and drop big-time. Seattle moves up a bit and had the Laker game ended at the half, the Sonics would be top 10 again.

Our real problem was what to do with the bottom 10. Where do the Bulls and Grizzlies, who were a combined 7-1 (after entering the week 8-49), belong? The eight teams that we thought about ranking below these heretofore patsies were 5-25. Are the Celtics, Magic, Hawks, Rockets, Mavs and Clips better than the Bulls or Grizz? Hey, the Grizz aren't that bad.

As for last, sure, the Warriors haven't won this calendar year and royally stink (P.J. still gets paid, and doesn't have to watch this dreck? What a country...), but they almost beat a hot Seattle team. The Wizards lost twice to the Bulls. Actually, it was their coach, Gar Heard, who convinced us where to stick them when he said "if we lost to them twice, then we must be the worst team." Now you are.

Anyway, here are the ESPN.com Power Rankings as of Jan. 11. Let us know your thoughts by clicking here and offering a few Rank Comments of your own. But please remember these two factors: a) these rankings were compiled Tuesday morning, and will not reflect anything that happens beginning Tuesday night; b) records are not the most important thing.

Team (Record) Last week Pvs. ESPN.com skinny
1. Lakers (30-5) 5-0 1 What, you were expecting Chicago? Dominant Lakers turn it on at will
2. Blazers (26-8) 3-1 2 No dropoff with Sabonis out because Brian Grant steps up; Love Bonzi!
3. Spurs (24-12) 3-2 4 Duncan did it alone with 46 vs. Jazz; Had Spurs lost, they'd be No. 5
4. Pacers (22-11) 2-2 3 Really can't drop them more; In fairness, just got caught by Clips
5. Jazz (22-11) 3-1 7 Still formidable; Inconsistent play of Stockton, Horny is a concern
6. Wolves (17-14) 4-0 18 Aren't just winning, are beating playoff teams; Get Lakers this week
7. Knicks (20-13) 2-1 6 Beat Boston, Orlando with Ewing; Lost tight one with him benched
8. Heat (21-11) 1-2 5 Heat lost to Grizzlies and Nets at home, drop should have been more
9. Suns (19-13) 1-2 9 We leave Suns alone because losses were to Blazers and Spurs
10. 76ers (19-16) 1-1 10 Brutal Ratliff on Sunday: 11 min., 0 points, 6 fouls, 4 offensive, 5 turns
11. Pistons (18-15) 2-1 13 Leap Bucks after beating them; Nobody, even Shaq, is hotter than Hill
12. Bucks (20-15) 3-1 12 Could be 10th, but Wiz, Hawks squeakers hurt; T. Thomas steps up
13. Kings (19-12) 2-2 11 Fans can't complain about this drop; Celts, Raps were 0-6 but beat Kings
14. Sonics (21-13) 3-1 17 Nice week almost was great week; Can Barry handle Maxwell's minutes?
15. Nets (14-20) 2-2 15 Nice win in Miami; The loss without Feick proved this guy matters
16. Hornets (18-16) 0-5 8 At home, they're tough; But they're a bad road team. Who loses by 50?
17. Nuggets (17-16) 2-2 16 Currently, they look like lone .500 team that won't make playoffs
18. Raptors (18-15) 1-3 14 If Raps think they can go places, they should deal McGrady for a good 1
19. Cavaliers (15-19) 3-1 24 Knicks win was only third of year on road, but next seven are on road
20. Grizzlies (10-24) 4-1 28 Beat Heat, Nets, Raps and Celts on road, and are 6-6 under Hollins
21. Celtics (14-19) 1-3 20 Lost to Grizz and Bulls, but Kings win saved bigger, embarrassing drop
22. Magic (16-19) 1-3 19 Freefalling, but did blow out Grizz; Nice to see Maggette improving
23. Hawks (12-21) 1-3 23 Stay ahead of Bulls, but don't deserve it; Changes are coming, J.R....
24. Bulls (5-26) 3-0 29 Kukoc now 3-4 this season; You know, this team might win a few
25. Clippers (10-23) 1-3 25 Sweep by Lakers no disgrace; Pacers win, and Olowokandi, impressive
26. Mavericks (10-24) 1-3 26 Declaration that Nellie's out worth a few spots in the rankings
27. Rockets (10-23) 0-3 22 Tough sked (Heat, Jazz, Sonics), but team is showing no life at all
28. Warriors (6-27) 0-4 27 Should be last; How long before St. Jean removes himself?
29. Wizards (11-23) 0-3 21 Bad, bad losses to Bulls; Sure, Kukoc returned, but he can't play defense!
