Throughout the rest of the playoffs, Bulls guard Hersey Hawkins will provide ESPN.com with an in-depth scouting report on several key players. Hawkins continues his series with a look at the New York point guards, Charlie Ward and Chris Childs. |
How to defend them:
I like both Chris Childs and Charlie Ward, especially when they are aggressive on the offensive end. You spend time preparing for New York by looking at Allan Houston, Latrell Sprewell, Patrick Ewing and Larry Johnson. You don't spend time on Childs and Ward, you help a lot off of them. Both are adequate three-point shooters and can knock it down. Ward is a lot better at driving to the hoop than Childs is. Childs is good at the escape dribble and has a nice mid-range jumper. Both can hurt you on offense, but they can both have long nights and hurt the team when they are not on.
How they defend you:
I would rather have Ward cover me than Childs. Ward is smaller and not as physical. Childs is a lot more physical and gets into you, bumps you and grinds it out. Ward uses his body a lot less but has the quickness to stay in front of you. Both are effective and can pressure and create havoc on the defensive end.
What role they fill for the Knicks: Childs and Ward get the job done, but aren't spectacular. Other Knicks do the scoring, not them. |
