Nuggets had interest in Mutombo

DENVER With the NBA trade deadline looming Thursday, the
Denver Nuggets were interested in acquiring one player -- former
Nugget Dikembe Mutombo.
But the 7-foot-2 center went to the Philadelphia 76ers from the
Atlanta Hawks in a six-player deal just hours before the deadline.
Mutombo and Roshown McLeod will go to the 76ers, who have the
NBA's best record, for Theo Ratliff, Toni Kukoc, Nazr Mohammed and
Pepe Sanchez.
Mutombo started his NBA career in Denver, where he played five
seasons. He left the Nuggets for the Hawks in 1996.
Mutombo was with the Nuggets in 1994 when the Nuggets became the
first No. 8 seed in NBA history to defeat the No. 1 seed. They
defeated Seattle in the first round of the playoffs and went seven
games against Utah in the second round before losing.
Mutombo, making $14.4 million this season, will be eligible for
free agency July 1. Atlanta has been fielding offers since July.
His stock rose following his 22-rebound performance in the All-Star
Game. His strong defense in the game helped ignite a 21-point
comeback by the East, which won the game 111-110.
Mutombo leads the league in rebounding with 14.1 per game.
