Jazz waste no time signing first-round pick

SALT LAKE CITY -- DeShawn Stevenson, who only a few weeks ago was a high school student, now is on his way to becoming a millionaire.

The Utah Jazz on Friday signed Stevenson, a 6-foot-5 inch shooting guard from Washington Union High School in Fresno, Calif. The Jazz chose Stevenson with their 23rd overall pick in the first round of last month's NBA Draft.

It was the first time Utah drafted a high school player.

Under the NBA's rookie salary scale, Stevenson will earn up to $828,120 next season as part of a three-year deal worth as much as $2.67 million. The Jazz hold an option for a fourth year at an additional $1.6 million.

Last season, Stevenson averaged 30.4 points, 9.7 rebounds and 6.2 assists a game.

On draft night, Stevenson was involved in a brawl after a high school all-star game. Prosecutors said this week they haven't decided whether to pursue charges against Stevenson or others involved.
