| | OAKLAND, Calif. -- Phoenix Suns guard Rex Chapman received an emergency appendectomy Saturday in Oakland when he became ill after the team's trip from Vancouver to the Bay area.

He is expected to miss at least two to three weeks and was placed on the injured list Monday. The team activated guard Todd Day to take Chapman's spot on the roster.
A 6-foot-4 reserve in his 12th NBA season, Chapman is averaging 6.6
points and 1.5 rebounds this season. He is shooting just 39
percent from the field but 33 percent from 3-point range
(41-of-123).
Day, a seven-year veteran, was averaging 6.4 points and 2.0
rebounds while shooting 37 percent from 3-point range
(43-of-116) before being placed on the injured list Feb. 8
with back spasms.
The slender 6-6 guard has missed 19 games but was eligible to
play Monday night at home against the Boston Celtics.
The Suns, who are without injured forward Tom Gugliotta for the
rest of the season, were fourth in the Western Conference at
42-23 on Monday, one-half game ahead of the San Antonio Spurs with 15
games left.
Suns trainer Joe Proski said Chapman began experiencing severe pain at about 3 a.m. Saturday.
Chapman had been suffering from back spasms recently, and at first he believed they were recurring. However, Proski said the pain was in the lower right quadrant of his abdomen. | |
