Sixers tie franchise-record road win streak

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME FLOW

DALLAS (AP) -- With help from his friends, Allen Iverson provided the Philadelphia 76ers something they haven't had since the days of Julius Erving: an 11-game winning streak on the road.

Allen Iverson
Allen Iverson scored 30 points Tuesday but only had to put up 22 shots as his teammates gave him help.

Iverson scored 30 points and Toni Kukoc added a season-high 25, including two key 3-pointers, as Philadelphia tied a team record for consecutive road wins with a 114-98 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday night.

The best part for the 76ers was that Iverson didn't have to do it all himself. Coach Larry Brown scolded the team after its last game, a 110-106 overtime loss to Toronto, because players deferred too much to their All-Star guard.

This time, five other players scored in double figures as Philadelphia made 54 percent of its shots.

"It's always great when you get a good contribution," Iverson said. "They've really been doing that all year."

George Lynch had 16 points and 13 rebounds. Aaron McKie made 6-of-7 shots for 12 points and had 11 assists.

"We got it out of Allen's hands, moved the ball around and were swinging it to other players," McKie said. "Toni was the difference tonight. Every time they went on a run, he was there to hit a big 3."

Kukoc buried bombs to cap runs of 12-2 and 9-0 to help keep the 76ers ahead throughout the final three quarters. He scored 19 of his points in the second half.

"At the start of the game, I was looking to pass the ball more than I was looking for my shot," Kukoc said. "Later on, I felt pretty comfortable shooting the ball. I had to find the good places and get open, especially when they were doubling."

The 76ers, who lead the NBA with 18 road wins, go to Houston on Wednesday night to try winning a 12th straight away from home. Philadelphia also won 11 in a row on the road from Oct. 15-Nov. 26, 1980, with a team led by Erving.

"When you can win 11 games in a row on the road, it tells you how good of a team we are," Kukoc said. "If we can keep our home court a little safer than what we've been doing, it would be nice."

Philadelphia won for the sixth time in the last seven games and avenged one of its worst losses of the season, a 112-94 Mavericks victory that remains the most points the Sixers have allowed.

Dirk Nowitzki, who scored 36 in that one, was held to 15 points. Michael Finley led Dallas with 27 points and set a club record with 10 steals, five coming in the first quarter. He was one shy of the NBA single-game record done twice, most recently by Kendall Gill in 1999.

"We knew Allen was going to get his 30, but we had to contain the rest of them. We weren't able to do that," Nowitzki said.

The Mavericks, who had been 14-4 against the East, snapped a three-game winning. Steve Nash returned after missing six games with a strained hamstring and scored 20 points with seven rebounds and seven assists.

"I'm trying to get back into it," Nash said. "It wasn't too bad, surprisingly."

Iverson, wearing a white sleeve-like bandage over most of his right arm to protect a sore elbow, got off to a fast start by hitting 4-of-6 shots and 5-of-6 free throws for 13 first-quarter points.

He cooled in the second period, even allowing his temper get the best of him as he received a technical foul for arguing with officials over a no-call. The Mavericks climbed within three during that quarter, but the 76ers broke things open in the third quarter even though Iverson was just 2-of-6.

"It's important for guys not to stand around when I get the ball," he said. "Overall, our chemistry has been much better."

Game notes
Philadelphia's Tyrone Hill missed the game with a form of vertigo. ... Dallas had its fourth sellout in five games and sixth in the last 10. There hadn't been any in the first 11. ... Nash and Philadelphia's Todd MacCulloch were teammates on Team Canada in the Olympics. .. The NBA's top two shot blockers battled. Theo Ratliff upped his total by two and Shawn Bradley had five.
